Farmer Stopped In Fourth In Plymouth, MA!

Front Royal, VA welterweight Andrew "The Doo Man" Farmer had a tough night tonight at Memorial Hall in Plymouth, MA.  Hometown hero Danny O'Connor stopped Farmer at 2:33 of the fourth round in front of a wildly partisan crowd and a nationally televised (Fox Sports 1) audience.

O'Connor was very aggressive throughout the contest landing hard shots to Farmer's head and body.  A series of shots forced Farmer to take a knee in the second round.  In the fourth round, the two clashed heads and O'Connor suffered a cut along the right eye.  However, O'Connor maintained his aggression and landed a brutal body shot that dropped Farmer again to one knee.  Farmer did not beat the referee's count and the bout was stopped.

Farmer's record drops to 18-3, seven KO's while O'Connor rises to 24-2, eight KO's.

Update on November 15 Patriot Center Card!

There's a lot of movement as we update the Patriot Center card for Saturday, November 15.

WIBA Welterweight champion Tori "Sho Nuff" Nelson of Ashburn, VA has an opponent for her title defense on this card.  The undefeated Nelson will face Victoria "La Reina De Guerra" Cisneros of Albuquerque, NM in a 10-round contest.  This will be Nelson's fourth title defense this year.

Cisneros (11-16-2, four KO's) will be participating in a world title bout for the sixth time in her career including her last four appearances.  Cisneros has faced a who's who of prominent female boxers including Holly Holm, Cecilia Braekhus, Chevelle Hallback and Mary McGee.

Also, Upper Marlboro, MD heavyweight Mike Balogun has been added to the card.  The former NFL linebacker made his pro debut on October 23 and scored a second-round TKO in Washington, DC.

Two Beltway Boxers who were scheduled to be on the card will not participate.  Former WBO Junior Welterweight champion DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley could not get a suitable opponent and Todd "White Lightning" Wilson hurt his ankle in training.

Ronald Hearns is also off the card and he will be replaced in his bout against Jonathan Reid by Thomas Brown of York, SC (15-4-2, nine KO's).

Cummings Wins Unanimous Decision Over Mack In New Jersey!

It's been a good weekend for Beltway Boxers in New Jersey.  On Friday night, Antoine Douglas and Glenn Dezurn captured victories in Somerset.  Then on Saturday night at Schuetzen Park in North Bergen, NJ, Baltimore, MD light heavyweight Cory "Black Ice" Cummings won a six-round unanimous decision over Yusef "Mack Attack" Mack of Philadelphia, PA.

Here is a report on the bout from Kurt Wolfheimer of Fightnews.com:

Cummings came out strong and immediately muscled Mack to the ropes. Surprisingly, Mack got caught while exchanging and dropped to his knees from two left hooks. Mack rose to his feet and Cummings attacked like a bull, but Mack put him to the canvas with a right hand. Referee Sammy Viruet incorrectly called it a slip and wiped off the gloves. The shorter Cummings was glued to Mack’s chest and continued to bang away. In the final thirty seconds, Mack turned it around with a huge right hand that forced Cummings to fall into the ropes. It should have been scored another knockdown, but veteran referee Sammy Viruet missed the call again by not calling anything.

Cummings looked out of gas in the second round as Mack with his back to the ropes banged two good body shots. Mack did not continue the attack, as he was also running on empty. Cummings turned him around and did some good work off his own. Mack would not get off the ropes, as he chose to fight the bowling ball-like Cummings fight. Mack eventually slipped away, but was again caught with a big shot and was taking a beating against the ropes as the round came to a close.

Mack sent Cummings into the ropes with a good right hand again in the third round. Cummings looked like he knew he could pull the upset and seemed energized as he continued to bang away on the inside. Mack slipped out and stood up Cummings with a left on the button. It would not stop Cummings, who just kept pressing forward. Mack finally began to gain his rhythm in the closing minute with sharp single shots.

It was battle of wills in the fourth, with Cummings pushing Mack to the ropes, but he would not quit and banged his opponent to slide off the ropes. Mack looked to be turning the tide by stepping out of range while landing single shots. Cummings would not let up though and again did his work whenever Mack laid on the ropes.

Cummings was on him like a wet suit, banging away as the fifth round began. Mack tried to regain his composure and box, but Cummings kept his head pressed against his chest. The former USBA champ finally found his mark with a big right as both traded. Mack hurt him again with a right hook. Cummings recovered quickly and got back inside, where he could stay away from Mack’s power until the bell sounded to end the round.

Mack tried desperately to land the big shot in the sixth and final round. He found his mark with a big right hand up top, but Cummings was steel chinned and came back with a left off he own. Mack swung away with a few more good shots, but just couldn’t hurt Cummings as the final bell sounded to end the fight.

The score were tallied and all three judges saw it in favor of Cory Cummings by scores of 59-54, 58-56 and 57-56 respectively.

Cummings is now 18-7-1, 13 KO's while Mack falls to 31-8-2, 17 KO's.

Mike Balogun, Former NFL Player, Makes Successful Pro Boxing Debut!

A private boxing show (not open to the media) held at the Mayflower Renaissance Hotel in Washington, DC on October 23 showcased the debut of a new Beltway Boxer with an interesting background.

Former NFL linebacker Mike Balogun scored a second-round TKO over the equally debuting Maurice Womack on a card put on by Alarm.com during their annual conference.  Balogun is a native of Upper Marlboro, MD who played college football at Lackawanna Junior College and the University of Oklahoma. Balogun lost his eligibility in 2009 when the NCAA ruled Balogun played with a Maryland minor league team after he turned 21.

Balogun was signed as a free agent by the San Francisco 49ers in 2010 and also played for Washington, Tampa Bay, Buffalo, Dallas and Indianapolis.

Also on the card, DC super featherweight "The Lion of Sri Lanka" Nuwan Jayakody stopped Arthur Parker of Lancaster, PA in the fourth round.  Jayakody evens his record at 4-4-1, three KO's.  Parker falls to 1-12-1, one KO.

Frederick, MD light heavyweight Larry "Hitman" Pryor won a six-round unanimous decision over Rayco "War" Saunders of Pittsburgh, PA.  Pryor is now 9-9, five KO's while Saunders drops to 23-26-2, 10 KO's.

The main event saw Aaron Pryor, Jr. of Cincinnati, OH and Marcus Upshaw of Jacksonville, FL battle to an eight-round draw.  Pryor, whose hall of fame father was in attendance, now has a record of 19-7-1, 12 KO's while Upshaw's record is 17-13-3, eight KO's.

According to eyewitnesses, the most exciting contest was the ladies bout between super flyweights Mikayla "MK Ultra" Nebel of Las Vegas, NV and Marisol "La Chihuahua" Miranda of Hollywood, FL.  Nebel won her first pro bout with a six-round unanimous decision over Miranda.   Nebel is now 1-6 while Miranda falls to 5-8-1, one KO.

Douglas, Dezurn Victorious In New Jersey!

Antoine "Action" Douglas and Glenn Dezurn scored victories on a card at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Somerset, NJ on Friday.

In the main event, Douglas, a middleweight from Burke, VA, stopped a very game Jose "Stinger" Medina of Tilden, NH at 42 seconds of the sixth round. According to noted boxing writer Jack Obermayer, Douglas hit Tilden with every punch in the book, especially in the latter stages of the contest. Newly re-appointed New Jersey Commission Boxing Chair Larry Hazzard forced the referee to stop the contest.

Douglas remains undefeated at 15-0-1, 10 KO's while Medina drops to 18-16-1, seven KO's.

Dezurn, a featherweight from Baltimore, MD, won a four-round unanimous decision over Joshua Reyes of Millville, NJ. Obermayer said Dezurn showed great hand speed in his combinations and Reyes offered very little resistance.  All three judges scored a shutout for Dezurn, 40-36.

Dezurn is now 5-0, three KO's.  Reyes falls to 5-3, two KO's.

Results From Rosecroft!

Here are the results from the Keystone Boxing card Friday night at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD:

Palmer Park, MD super featherweight Kevin "K-Smoov" Rivers, Jr. remained undefeated with a sixth-round TKO over Karl Garcia-Rios of Caguas, Puerto Rico in the main event.  Rivers was solid throughout as he used a crisp jab and precise body shots to eventually break Garcia-Rios down.  The bout was eventually stopped at 2:19 of the sixth round.

Rivers is now 10-0, seven KO's while Garcia-Rios drops to 4-3, one KO.

In the co-feature, Baltimore, MD cruiserweight Venroy "Hardwork" July was stopped in the second round by Tony "Boom Boom" Ferrante of Philadelphia, PA,  July's lack of power proved to be the undoing as he could not keep the powerful Ferrante away.  After Ferrante felt July's punches in the first round, he came right after July in the second, staggering July around the ring.  Ferrante finished his work with a brutal straight right hand that toppled July back-first to the canvas.  July tried to get to his feet but couldn't and the bout was stopped at 1:26.

July is now 16-2-3, six KO's while Ferrante is 14-6, nine KO's.

Junior welterweight Patrick Harris of DC won a tough, four-round majority decision over Jeffrey Ramos of San Juan, Puerto Rico.  Harris had a difficult time with his defense as Ramos landed some tough shots to the body.  However, Harris's offense was the difference especially in the first and final rounds as he was able to use his jab very efficiently.  Judge Don Risher saw an even contest at 38-38 but he was overruled by judges Brent Bovell and John Gradowski who saw the bout for Harris at 39-37.

Harris goes the distance for the first time in his young pro career and he is now 3-0, two KO's.  Ramos's record evens at 3-3, two KO's,

Junior lightweight Cobia "Soldier" Breedy of Bridgetown, Barbados made his pro debut a successful one as he won a four-round unanimous decision over Thomas "The Animal" Herrera of Las Vegas, NV.

Breedy, who fought in front of a host of supporters including the Barbadian Ambassador to the United States, used very quick hands to keep Herrera off balance.  Herrera tried to make the contest an ugly one but got beat up in the process.  Breedy dropped Herrera twice in the latter stages of the contest but Herrera was upright at the final bell.  All three judges scored a shutout, 40-36 and 40-35 (twice).

Herrera is now 3-13-1, one KO.

Capitol Heights, MD light heavyweight Shaborn Ryals scored his first professional knockout stopping David "Rock Steady" Rohn of Grand Rapids, MI at 1:04 of the first round.

Ryals dominated early, throwing a nice right hand to the body that dropped Rohn to his knees twice en route to the victory.  Ryals is now 2-0, one KO while Rohn is 0-2-1, two NC's.

DC featherweight Marcus "The Dreamcrusher" Bates stopped a game Edgardo Marin of Humacao, Puerto Rico at 1:08 of the fourth round.

Bates and Marin fought on even terms during the first two rounds, however Bates picked up the pace in the second half of the contest, knocking down Marin in the third and fourth rounds with right hands.  The bout was stopped at 1:08 of the fourth.

Bates is now 3-0-1, three KO's while Marin is 0-3-1.

In the opening bout, Rockville, MD cruiserweight Mario Flores won a four-round split decision over 39-year old debuting Marcellus "O.G. Superpug" Yates of DC,

Flores established his jab in the first two rounds.  Yates responded with some crushing right hands that backed Flores up at times.  The two traded crisp punches throughout the duration of the contest, with Flores gaining enough of an advantage to win the contest 39-37 on two scorecards.  One judge saw the bout 39-37 for Yates.

Flores's record improves to 6-1-2, four KO's.

Among those attending the card were The Peterson Brothers, Beltway Boxing legends Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson and Keith Holmes as well as former world champion Austin "No Doubt" Trout.

Beltway Boxing Hometown Schedule!

We will mark the last three months of Beltway Boxing 2014 with no less than EIGHT pro cards between October 24 and December 6!

This does not include the private card that is being held at the Renaissance Hotel in DC on Thursday, October 23.  No fans or media are allowed at that event.

My writing partner, Juan Marshall, has the majority of the schedule listed on his blog, ProAm Fight Talk.  That list, with the accompanying posters, can be found here:  http://proamfighttalk.blogspot.com/2014/10/beltway-boxing-area-upcoming-fight-cards.html   Some of these cards (October 24, November 1 and November 15) we have talked about in some detail.

We also have the two annual charity boxing cards -- the eighth Annual Jonathan Ogden Foundation card on Thursday, November 6 at Martin's Valley Mansion in Cockeysville, MD and the 25th anniversary of Fight Night at the Washington Hilton Hotel in DC on Thursday, November 13.

By the way, the Royal Farms Arena, where the Baltimore card is taking place on November 13, is the new name for the downtown Baltimore Arena -- or for you old heads like me, the Baltimore Civic Center.

Beltway Boxers Making Fall Traveling Arrangements!

A number of Beltway Boxers will hit the road in the next few weeks, many scheduled to appear on some marquee cards.  Here's the list as we know it now (bouts subject to change):

Saturday, October 18 -- Undefeated Bowie, MD super middleweight "The King's Son" Jerry Odom (12-0, 11 KO's) is slated to headline a card at the Dunmore Community Center in Scranton, PA.  No word yet on an opponent for this scheduled eight-round contest.

Friday, October 24 -- Burke, VA middleweight Antoine "Action" Douglas and Baltimore, MD featherweight Glenn Dezurn, Jr. will participate on a card at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Somerset, NJ.  Douglas (14-0-1, nine KO's) will be in the eight-round main event against Jose "Stinger" Medina of Tilton, NH by way of Mexico (18-15-1, seven KO's).  Douglas is coming off the 10-round draw against Michel Soro on July 25 in Verona, NY.  Medina has lost three of his last four.

Dezurn (4-0, three KO's) will face Joshua Reyes of Millville, NJ (5-2, two KO's) in a four-round encounter.  Dezurn scored a first-round TKO over Andre Canada on July 25 in Verona, NY.  Reyes last fought on February 12 and lost a six-round unanimous decision to Bryant Cruz in New York City.

Saturday, October 25 -- Baltimore light heavyweight Cory "Black Ice" Cummings will battle Yusef "The Mack Attack" Mack of Philadelphia, PA at Schuetzen Park in North Bergen, NJ. The bout is a scheduled six-rounder.  Cummings (17-7-1, 13 KO's) and Mack (31-7-2, 17 KO's) will try to break three-bout losing streaks.

Thursday, October 30 -- We've already told you about this one -- Front Royal, VA junior welterweight Andrew "The Doo Man" Farmer will battle Danny O'Connor in a 10-round, nationally-televised (Fox Sports 1) main event bout at Memorial Hall in Plymouth, MA.

Now comes word that two more Beltway Boxers have been added to the undercard -- super middleweight D'Mitrius "Big Meech" Ballard of Temple Hills, MD (6-0, five KO's) and lightweight Lamont Roach, Jr. of Upper Marlboro, MD (3-0, one KO).  Neither man has an opponent for their bout.

Saturday, November 1 -- undefeated Laurel, MD middleweight Demond "D'Best At It" Nicholson (10-0, 10 KO's) makes his first trip away from the Beltway as he has been added to the card at UIC Pavilion in Chicago, IL.  No word yet on his opponent.

Also on that card, Lynchburg, VA middleweight Scott "Cujo" Sigmon (24-5-1, 13 KO's) takes on Caleb "Golden" Truax of Osseo, MN (24-1-2, 14 KO's) in a 10-round contest.  That bout will be part of the Showtime Extreme telecast.

Saturday, November 29 -- Waldorf, MD junior welterweight Mike "Yes, Indeed" Reed (11-0, six KO's) travels to the Century Link Center in Omaha, NE for his first scheduled eight-round contest.  No word yet on his opponent.

This card will be on the undercard of a world title doubleheader -- Terence Crawford defends his WBO lightweight title against Raymundo Beltran and Evgeny Gradovich puts his IBF Featherweight title on the line against Jayson Velez.  This will be an HBO-televised card but no word if Reed's bout will be televised.

This out-of-town schedule, combined with what we have scheduled in the area, will make for a fun last three months of the year!  We'll have the Beltway schedule later on today.

The new opponent for Harrison (23-0, 12 KO's) in this scheduled 10-round contest will be veteran Michael "Cold Blood" Clark of Columbus, OH (44-11-1, 18 KO's).   Harrison is coming off an eight-round unanimous decision win over Wilfredo Acuna on July 26 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.   Clark, a cast member of the second season of The Contender, has been stopped in four of his last five contests.

There are four six-round bouts scheduled for the card.  Undefeated Landover, MD junior middleweight "The Cuban Assassin" Larry Recio will battle Roberto Lopez of Kissimmee, FL.  Recio (7-0, five KO's) won a six-round unanimous decision over Grayson Blake on July 24 in Fort Washington, MD.  Lopez (4-7-2, one KO's) will be facing a Beltway Boxer for the third time.  Lopez lost by four-round unanimous decision to David Grayton in October of 2013 in DC and was stopped by Mike Reed in the third round in July of last year in Fort Washington.

In heavyweight action, "The Big Ticket" Dwayne McRae will face off against Grover Young of Memphis, TN.  McRae (14-3, eight KO's) is looking for his fifth straight victory.  McRae stopped Zeferino Albino in the third round in his last bout on May 17 in Annandale, VA.  Young (8-13-1, five KO's) broke a six-bout losing streak with his first-round knockout victory over Mathan Hester on September 20 in Memphis.

Undefeated Accokeek, MD junior middleweight "Swift" Jarrett Hurd returns to action against Terry Cade of Aiken, SC.  Hurd (12-0, seven KO's) stopped Joshua Robertson in the first round on June 13 in Fort Washington.  Cade (4-6-1, two KO's) will try to break a four-bout losing streak as he faces an undefeated boxer for the fourth time in his last five contests.

In another six-round contest, "The Pride of Alexandria" Brandon Quarles of Alexandria, VA will take on Dennis Sharpe of Bayonne, NJ.  Quarles (13-3-1, five KO's) will look to bounce back from his eight-round unanimous decision loss to Corey Rodriguez on August 2 in Carlton, MN.  Sharpe (17-13-4, four KO's) will make his second straight trip to DC.  In his last outing, Sharpe was stopped in the fourth round by Demond Nicholson.

Rookie lightweight Mykal "The Professor" Fox of Forestville, MD will battle veteran Sean Lockhart of Columbia, SC in a four-round bout.  Fox (3-0, one KO) scored his first professional knockout in his last outing with a third-round TKO over Mason Wicket on July 18 in Fort Washington, MD.  Lockhart (5-23-2, two KO's) also makes a quick return to DC after dropping a six-round unanimous decision to Bobby Gunn, Jr. on August 9.

Fort Washington super bantamweight Marq "The Monster" Johns will be in another four-rounder against Jesus Gonzales of Bethlehem, PA.  Johns (4-0-1, four KO's) has stopped his last four opponents.  Gonzales (2-9, two KO's) has gone the distance in four of his last five contests but has lost five in a row.

Also, lightweight Emanuel "Jab" Johnson of Brandywine, MD will take on the debuting Patrick Chaffin of Memphis, TN.  Johnson (2-0) won a four-round majority decision over Calvin Smith on July 18 in Fort Washington.

Bouts Added To November 15 Patriot Center Card!

Some interesting bouts have been added to the Saturday, November 15 card at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA.

In an all-Virginia junior welterweight showdown, "The Baby-Faced Assassin" Yurii Polischuk of Alexandria battles Juan "The Savior' Rodriguez of Haymarket in a six-round contest.  Polischuk (6-1-1, two KO's) just fought on October 11 and won a six-round unanimous decision over Benjamin Olinga at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA.  Rodriguez (5-2-1, four KO's) returns to action for the first time since October of 2012 when he won a four-round unanimous decision over Damon Antoine in Arlington, VA.

Also on the card, undefeated Frederick, MD super middleweight Devar "The Warrior" Ferhadi returns to action in a four-round bout against veteran Jess "Thunder" Noriega of Lynchburg, VA. The last outing for Ferhadi (3-0, two KO's) was in April of 2013 when he won a four-round unanimous decision over PJ Cajigas in Upper Marlboro, MD.  Noriega (3-11, three KO's) broke a six-bout losing streak with a first-round knockout win over Cam Hoback on October 4 in Lynchburg.

Two out-of-town veterans will face each other in a special attraction contest.  "The Chosen One" Ronald Hearns of Southfield, MI battles Jonathan "Reid Dawg" Reid of Nashville, TN.  Both men are in desperate need of a win -- Hearns (26-5, 20 KO's) has been stopped in each of his last four bouts while Reid (35-15, 19 KO's) has just one win in his last 11 contests.

Hearns, the son of hall of fame champion Thomas Hearns, has ties to the DC area as he played basketball at American University.  Reid makes his fourth trip to the Patriot Center and his last bout was in the greater Beltway region when he was stopped in the eighth round against Scott Sigmon in Winchester, VA.

This card features the rematch between Tony Jeter and Jimmy Lange along with bouts featuring DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley, Tori "Sho Nuff" Nelson and Todd "White Lightning" Wilson.

Remembering Tracy Thorpe!

(Photos courtesy of the South Atlantic Association of USA Boxing)

We need more people in the Beltway Boxing community like Tracy Thorpe.  Yes, we have so many people who care about our young boxers.  However, Tracy cared enough to not let them get away with anything.

Whether she was in the ring as a referee or outside the ring as a judge or as an administrator, Tracy defined the term "no-nonsense" during her 17 years with the South Atlantic Association of USA Boxing. She was a true leader in every sense of the word.  Nothing got past her and no matter how hectic things got, she never got rattled and she always kept the boxers first.

Tracy was a lifetime member of Ring 101 and the first woman and African-American to receive the organization's Harry Jaffra award for meritorious service.  That was an example of the type of leader and person she was.

Tracy suffered a stroke in September of 2012 and, being the fighter she was, she battled.  In July of 2013 at a card at Coppin State University, Tracy made an appearance and looked wonderful. This picture has her alongside Calvin Ford. That was my last time having an opportunity to talk to her and I was proud of the way she fought back.

Eventually, however, Tracy lost her battle this past Friday on what would have been her 64th birthday.  Tracy's memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 18 at:

First Baptist Church of Guilford
7504 Oakland Mills Road
Columbia, MD

The service will begin at 9:30 AM.

Thank you for everything, Tracy.  You will truly be missed.

Yurii Polischuk captured a six-round unanimous decision over Benjamin Olinga to win the Virginia State Junior Welterweight title.

Polischuk simply landed the harder and crisper punches against the game Olinga.  Polischuk won the bout by scores of 59-55 (twice) and 60-54.  Polischuk is now 6-1-1, two KO's.  Olinga is now 1-9.

Good night from Springfield!

Quigley Stops Coney In One!

Gerome Quigley had an easy time defeating Cedric Coney at 2:57 of the first round.

Quigley had to chase Coney around a little bit before he finally landed a couple of rights that stopped Coney and dropped him to his knees.

Quigley is now 5-0, four KO's.  Coney is 3-2.

Main event is next for the Virginia State Junior Welterweight Title --"The Baby-Faced Assassin" Yurii Polischuk (5-1-1, two KO's vs. Benjamin "Wildcat" Olinga (1-8). Six rounds.

Sawyer Drops Chambers Twice For First-Round Victory!

Mike Sawyer scored two knockdowns en route to an easy first-round stoppage of Nate Chambers.

Sawyer fended off the charging offense of Chambers to drop him twice with right hands.  The bout was stopped at 1:07.

Sawyer is now 6-3, three KO's.  Chambers is 0-2.

Co-feature is next: Gerome Quigley of Montgomery Village, MD 4-0, three KO's battles Cedric Coney (3-1) of Kannapolis.

Reyes Stops Stewart In Two!

Edwin Reyes has stopped Tyron Stewart at 40 seconds of the second round.

After an awkward first round, Reyes put on the pressure and dropped Stewart with a right hand.  Stewart beat the count but was in no condition to continue.

Reyes remains undefeated at 5-0, four KO's.  Stewart is now 3-3.

Next up: "Money" Mike Sawyer of Winter Park, FL by way of Culpepper, VA (5-3, three KO's) battles Nate Chambers of Kannapolis, NC (0-1). Four rounds, light heavyweights.

Reyes Battles Stewart As Action Resumes In Springfield!

We are back in action at the ABC Sports Complex as Edwin "El Matador" Reyes of Laurel, MD (4-0, three KO's) faces Tyron Stewart of Kannapolis, NC (3-2). Four rounds, Junior lightweights.

Cepeda Stops Gonzalez in Five!

Jonathon Cepeda scored a fifth-round TKO over a game Lester Gonzalez.

Cepeda dropped Gonzalez in the fourth round with a vicious right hand.  The fifth round saw Cepeda stagger Gonzalez with another right.  Gonzalez fell to the canvas and the bout was stopped at 1:57.

Cepeda is now 15-1, 13 KO's while Gonzalez is 12-15-4, six KO's.

We are now at intermission.

Flores Blasts Pittman In One!

We have yet another candidate for Beltway Boxing Knockout of the Year.  Mario Flores used a brutal right hand to drop Christian Pittman three times en route to a first-round stoppage.

Early in the first, Flores dropped Pittman with a solid right hand.  Moments later, Flores used the same punch with the same result.

As soon as Pittman got up from the second knockdown, Flores came roaring out of the neutral corner, right hand cocked.  Flores rushed over and fired the right hand landing flush on Pittman's jaw and knocking him out.  The bout was immediately stopped at 1:51.

Flores is now 5-1-2, four KO's.  Pittman drops to 3-5.

Now in the ring, Jonathan "El Conquistador" Cepeda of New York City (14-1, 12 KO's) takes on Lester "El Cubanito" Gonzalez of San Diego, CA.  Eight rounds, super middleweights.

Farmer Stops Coca In First; Williamson Wins in Second!

Our first two bouts have completed.  Tevin Farmer stopped Dominic Coca at 1:41 in the first round.  Farmer dropped Coca with a left hook early in the first then completed the job with a left to the body.

Farmer is now 17-4, three KO's while Coca is 8-10, two KO's.

Our second contest is one of the few knockouts caused by sheer exhaustion of the losing boxer simply because he was trying so hard to avoid being hit.

At 6'7" and 250 pounds, Columbia, MD heavyweight Stan Williamson had a huge size over opponent Juwan Love of Concord, NC, who was making his pro debut.  Love was determined to avoid the possibly punishing blows of Williamson.

So he ran around the ring.  And ran. And landed a couple of punches, followed by more running. Williamson landed some punches but Love kept running and dodging.  So much so that he got tired enough that the combination of punches and running made him take a knee.  Seconds later, Love took another knee for the 10-count and the bout was over at 1:20 of the second round.

Williamson is now 3-0, three KO's.

Up next:  Mario "Bazooka" Flores (4-1-2, three KO's takes on Christian Pittman of Baton Rouge, LA (3-4). Four rounds, light heavyweights.

Good Evening, Once Again, From Springfield, VA!

Tracy Thorpe, Long-Time Member of South Atlantic Association of USA Boxing, Passes!

We will have a full obituary on her in the next couple of days but I just wanted to get the word out that one of the true gems of the Beltway amateur scene has passed away.

Tracy Thorpe, a long-time member of the South Atlantic Association of USA Boxing, died Friday evening on what would reportedly have been her 63rd birthday.

As I said, I will have a full obit on Tracy but suffice it to say, she was a wonderful person who was no-nonsense when it came to what went on during an amateur card.  As many of her co-workers have said, she was the glue that kept many cards together.  To say she will be truly missed is an understatement.

I will have more to say in the next few days.  BATB sends its deepest condolences to the family.

Out-Of-Town Bout Added To October 11th Card in Springfield!

The Jeter Promotions/RBA Promotions card on Saturday, October 11 at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA has what should be an interesting bout between two out-of-town boxers.

Philadelphia, PA featherweight "The American Idol" Tevin Farmer will take on Dominic Coca of Watts, CA in an eight-round contest.

Farmer (16-4-1, three KO's) is coming off winning his first 10-round encounter, scoring a unanimous decision over previously undefeated Emanuel Gonzalez on June 5 in Boston, MA. Farmer is currently riding a nine-bout winning streak.

Farmer has fought in the Beltway region before -- his first two pro contests took place in Maryland.  Farmer lost his pro debut to Oscar Santana by fourth-round TKO in Baltimore in February of 2011, then defeated Angelo Ward in April of that year by unanimous decision in Millersville.

Coca (8-9, two KO's) will be trying to break a seven-bout losing streak including a six-round unanimous decision loss to Cesar Villarraga on July 25 in Ontario, CA.  This will be only the second time Coca has fought on the East Coast of the US.

The main event on this card remains the six-round rematch for the Virginia State Junior Welterweight title between Yurii Polischuk and Benjamin Olinga.

Jackson-Benson Scores Seventh-Round TKO in Mississippi!

"The Real Deal" Phil Jackson-Benson scored a seventh-round TKO over Michael Gbenga tonight at the Beau Rivage Casino in Biloxi, MS.  Here is how Tracy Morin of Fightnews.com saw the bout:

"With Gbenga unable to sustain an offense thanks to his leaping and lunging attack, a patient Benson landed body shots and vicious right hooks at will. But the bout would have a bizarre finish: Gbenga hit the canvas after a low blow and claimed he was unable to continue. Referee Keith Hughes called the fight as a TKO victory for Benson at 0:34 in round 7."

Jackson-Benson is now 15-1, 14 KO's while Gbenga is now 20-17, 20 KO's.

De La Hoya Tells Washington Post He Wants To Bring Another Big Fight To DC!

The Washington Post's Gene Wang recently sat down with 10-time world champion, International Boxing Hall of Famer and founder of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya.

During the interview, De La Hoya, who now has control of the day-to-day operations of Golden Boy Promotions, expressed a deep interest in bringing a big card to the Verizon Center in DC.

To read the article and see the accompanying interview, click on this link:  http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/de-la-hoya-eyes-bringing-fight-to-dc/2014/10/05/24a82016-4be9-11e4-a4bf-794ab74e90f0_story.html

There is an inaccuracy in the article.  The article says that the Mike Tyson-Kevin McBride fight was the first and only fight to be held at MCI (now Verizon Center).  Longtime readers of this blog know that is definitely not true.  The "Triple Jeopardy" card of April 24, 1999 was the first followed by a card five months later on September 24, 1999 featuring William Joppy vs. Julio Cesar Green and Keith Holmes-Andrew Council II.

Coley, Green, Vinson Headline 2014 DC Boxing Hall Of Fame Induction Class!

Two members of the Beltway's famed "Hard Corps" stable and a former Olympian lead the Washington, DC Boxing Hall Of Fame Induction Class for 2014.

Former NABF champions Derrell "Too Sweet" Coley and Reggie "Showtime" Green are two of the selections in the Professional Boxers category.  Coley, Green, Reuben "Ratman" Bell and Gerry "Rock" Payne comprised the "Hard Corps" group of the early-mid 90's that was led by manager Barry Linde and trained by Leonard Langley, Al Scott and Vardell McCann.

Coley (38-2-2, 27 KO's) fought out of Capitol Heights, MD and first came to prominence with a first-round TKO over former world champion Saoul Mamby in August of 1993 at Prince George's Community College in Largo, MD.  Coley captured the NABF Welterweight championship on July 5, 1994 with a thrilling 11th round TKO over Terrence Alli in front of a nationally-televised (USA Network) audience at the Washington Convention Center.

Coley lost the title to Oba Carr by a very controversial 12-round unanimous decision on August 12, 1995 in Las Vegas.  Coley regained the NABF title in another thrilling contest, winning by 11th round TKO over Kip Diggs on March 25, 1997 in Oxnard, CA.

Coley became the first Beltway Boxer since Sugar Ray Leonard to fight for a million-dollar purse in his battle against Oscar De La Hoya on February 26, 2000 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.  Coley started well in the bout but eventually was stopped in the seventh round.  Coley finished his career winning his last four bouts.

Green (33-5, 15 KO's) won his first title -- the Maryland State Junior Welterweight title -- in the second of two contests with fellow local Lyndon Paul Walker.  After winning his first 16 contests, Green faced Beltway Boxing legend Darryll Tyson in a 12-round contest for the NABF and USBA 140-pound titles on September 20, 1994 at the DC Armory.  Green would lose by a 12-round split decision in one of the most thrilling contests in Beltway Boxing history.

Green would return to the Armory and capture the USBA title on January 31, 1995 with a 12-round split decision over Jaime Balboa.  However, he would lose another opportunity to win the NABF title in a second-round knockout loss to Charles Murray on October 10, 1995 in Murray's hometown of Rochester, NY.  Green would eventually win the NABF title with a unanimous decision over Ray Oliveira on August 5, 1997 in Mashantucket, CT.

Green would receive his first world title shot against Beltway Boxing legend Sharmba Mitchell for Mitchell's WBA Junior Welterweight championship in the main event of the "Triple Jeopardy" card at the MCI (now Verizon Center) in DC on April 24, 1999.  Green would drop a 12-round majority decision.  In his next bout, Green fought another tough bout against Micky Ward on October 1, 1999 in Salem, NH and would be stopped in the 10th round.  Green would end his career with another world shot against IBF Junior Welterweight champ Zab Judah on January 13, 2000 in Uncasville, CT but would lose by 10th round TKO.

Joining Coley and Green in the Professional Boxers category are "Dangerous D" Darryl Lattimore and "Joltin'" Joe Fitzpatrick.
