Beltway Boxing Coach John Sneed Passes!

Sad news to report.  Long-time DC-area boxing coach John F. Sneed passed away on July 10 of congestive heart failure.  He was 89 years old.

A native Washingtonian, Mr. Sneed started coaching boxing in 1952 at the Number 2 Boys and Girls Club on 3rd and K Streets, NW. His teams won numerous local and national championships in the 1960's.  Among his talented boxers were Sherman Williams, who was the All-Air Force champion in 1961 and 1962 and Calvin Woodland who was a National Golden Gloves champion in 1963 and 1964.

Mr. Sneed was inducted into the Jabbo Kenner Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Washington, DC Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991.

Survivors include his daughter Cassandra Sneed Ogden as well as his grandsons -- Pro Football Hall of Famer Jonathan Ogden and former Howard University and NFL player Marques Ogden.

The funeral for Mr. Sneed will take place on Wednesday, July 16 at Florida Avenue Baptist Church located at 623 Florida Avenue in Northwest DC.  The viewing begins at 10 AM and the funeral starts at 11 AM.
