Results From The Patriot Center!

Here is a recap of the ICE Promotions card at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA:

Great Falls, VA junior middleweight Jimmy Lange captured the WBU (World Boxing Union) Junior Middleweight championship with a sixth-round TKO over Raul "El Toro" Munoz of Topeka, KS. The bout was stopped at 2:44 of the sixth. Lange is now 37-4-2, 25 KO's. Munoz is 22-15-1, 12 KO's.

Charlottsville, VA junior middleweight George "Wartime" Rivera won an eight-round unanimous decision over Jonathan "Reid Dawg" Reid of Nashville, TN. Rivera scored a shutout on two of the judges cards 80-72. One judge saw the bout 79-73. Rivera is 13-6, four KO's while Reid is 35-13, 19 KO's.

Fairfax, VA junior welterweight Todd "White Lightning" Wilson wqn a six-round unanimous decision over former IBF Featherweight champion Eric "Mighty Mouse" Aiken of DC. Wilson (11-0, three KO's) survived a knockdown in the third round to gain the victory. Wilson won by scores of 59-54, 58-55, and 59-55. Aiken, who fought for the first time in three years, is now 16-8-1, 12 KO's.

Zain "Tiger" Shah of Chantilly, VA won by second round TKO over "Vicious" Julius Kennedy of Baltimore. The bout was stopped at 1:50 of the second round, but not without controversy. After what proved to be the final knockdown, Shah hit Kennedy as Kennedy was on his knees. No points were taken off and the outcome stood. Shah remains undefeated at 6-0, four KO's while Kennedy falls to 7-3-1, three KO's. The Kennedy camp told BATB that they are looking into a protest.

WBC Female Middleweight champ Tori "Sho Nuff" Nelson of Ashburn, VA won a four-round unanimous decision over Philadelphia, PA's Michelle "Monster" Garland. All three judges scored the bout 39-37. Nelson is now 5-0-1, while Garland is 1-2-1.

Lynchburg, VA super middleweight Scott "Cujo" Sigmon won an eight-round unanimous decision over Bruce "The Rage" Rumbolz of Sterling, IL. Sigmon won on all three judge's cards, 79-73. Sigmon is now 17-3, eight KO's while Rumbolz is 22-23-2, 13 KO's.

Jackie Kallen leads ICE Promotions. The matchmaker was JD Brown.

Here is the BATB Post-Fight Wrap-Up show with myself and "The Fight Doctor" Jerome Spears.

Okay, for the Aiken-Wilson bout I see how it could be 59-54 (Wilson won all 6 rounds but got knocked down once; this was how I had it) or 58-55 (one judge had Aiken winning a round), but how could 1 judge have it 59-55?

Gary, you have the wrong audio formerly known as GabCast up. That's the old one from Du Burns.

Shah vs Kennedy has to be overturned. The real result should be a disqualification loss to Shah because he hit Kennedy when Kennedy was down on his knee. That was a very dangerous situation because Kennedy was already badly hurt and there was at least a full second before Shah took a free and illegal shot on a defenseless and hurt Kennedy. I am very surprised that Malik Walid, an excellent referee in my opinion, blew that call. He should have disqualified Shah on the spot but instead waved the bout off and declared Shah the winner via knockout. If I were in the Kennedy camp I would be raising holy hell. It will be interesting to see what Dave Holland and the Virginia Boxing Commission do about this. We all know that historically boxing commissions have been impotent and powerless in situations like this and that decisions are rarely overturned. A boxing commission's job, per their own proclamation, is to protect the fighter first and foremost. Now if they don't do anything about this fight, where an illegal punch was landed on a fighter who was already badly hurt, how in the hell can they say they are protecting Julius Kennedy?

George Rivera showed glimpses of how good he can really be in a shutout of veteran Jonathan Reid. He knocked Reid down in the second and I felt there would be a moment in the fight where Reid would taste George's power and realize he was in the ring with a fighter who was far better than his 12 and 6 record would indicate. In three separate instances Pepe Correa, William Joppy, and Jackie Kallen spoke with George and told him how talented he is but that he has to throw more punches and put his combinations together. Of course Bruce Frank and I among many others told him that as well and we're not trying to be hard on George, we just see the potential there and we see that George can do more. When George is in shape and focused, there aren't too many fighters in his weight class he can't beat. If he ever realizes his full potential, he could be a truly special fighter. We love you George. If you keep working hard and stay focused you have unlimited potential.

The Jimmy Lange fight was extremely exciting. Munoz came to fight and pressed the action. But Lange is one of the tougher fighters in boxing and showed his heart and skills in the fight. People underestimate Jimmy's speed and jab. He's far faster than he's given credit for and he has one of the best jabs in boxing. It was good catching up with him and his dad Johnny and I would say we've buried the hatchet and agreed to let bygones be bygones. Supposedly there are some pictures out there taken after the fight. I don't know, haven't seen them yet.

And speaking of tough fighters there isn't one, and I mean one fighter in the world that you can legitimately say is tougher than Cujo. Bruce Rumbolz hit him with a left hook, when Cujo threw a left hook and missed, and it hit Cujo flush right on the chin. It had no effect at all. Cujo just took it like it was nothing. I don't think 99% of the fighters in the world would have been able to take such a clean shot, right on the point of the chin, with the momentum of your own body weight going forward and basically doubling the power of the punch that is landed. He's a special guy and a real combination of toughness, durability, a chin that is beyond world class it's out of this world, and conditioning. He's also far faster than people think he is and he can box a lot better than he is given credit for. He is not a mindless brawler who just eats punches. He can take a shot but he doesn't get hit with everything anymore. I don't care who is across the ring from him, they are going to have a real fight on their hands when he's in the other corner.

Mike Stewart was in our locker room. Let me tell you, he's a super nice guy and he's funny too. Did you know he's only 33 years old? I asked him when did he turn pro at like the age of 15? He told me he was 18 when he turned pro. Michael Amakor, of FightKings.com came in to the locker room to talk to the fighters. Stewart asked him where he was from and Amakor told him Nigeria. Stewart replied, "Do you have any good scams for me!" Hilarious! Of course it not PC but it was said purely in jest.

Good win for Todd Wilson. When he was knocked down it was not really a legitimate knockdown. He was going forward and Aiken, who is quite frankly a dirty fighter, pulled Wilson down by the back of the head.

Joe, I've been one of your criticizers in the past, but I must admit your posts on this entry have been the most appropriate of any of your posts in the past. Thank you for helping promote and build our sport and not tear it down.

Joe Hensley said...

Now that's what I call a left handed compliment - half compliment and half put down. What have I ever done to tear this sport down? I sign my name to my posts because I have the courage to stand behind what I say. If signing my name makes me a target for those in boxing that just happen to be scumbags, then so be it.

Anonymous said...

Signing your name has nothing to do with it, Joe. Do you remember when you last appeared after a hiatus, trying to pull area professional boxing down to the level of professional wrestling by calling out fighters and threatening to put on the gloves and fight? I recall you trying to trivialize our sport. I was so happy when you went on sabbatical after that insanity. I hope you return with a mindset of working behind the scenes to build our sport and not with fake swagger by shamelessly self-promoting youself out front and tearing area boxing down. That's my hope. You can be a very important figure on the scene.

ACW said...

Gary, about that Aiken-Wilson score...?

Joe Hensley said...

You've got it all wrong pal and if you're such a defender of "our sport" why don't you sign your name? I guess that if you signed your name you would be a "shameless self-promoter" as you accuse me to be? So in your book anyone who signs their name is a self promoter? Calling out fighters and promoting fights is an age old tradition. You ever heard of Muhammad Ali? What about Tyson, Toney? If you don't like it that's your right but everything I've done is by design. I always tried to make fights that I thought were good fights for my fighters career and if I had to make it personal then that's just the way it had to be. I even told our camp if we had to get down and dirty, let me be the lightning rod. All of it was by design. Heck, Mike Stewart and Jimmy Lange called each other out after their fights. They said they were going to knock Stewart out. They even said who is Mike Stewart? That's promoting pal. Perry Ballard called Jimmy Lange out and he got the fight. That's part of the game. It's not that I wanted the attention, I could care less. I was just trying to get things done. I guess you think that by signing my name I am looking for attention? Nope. I'm just a man with courage in my convictions and I don't have a "fake swagger" it's called confidence. I can handle myself just fine. There are a lot of scumbags and low lifes in this business and regardless of what you may say, I am not one of them and I know I am not one of them. Anyone I've ever done business with will tell you that. I am however not afraid to call those people out and sign my name to what I say. Now the instance you were referring to about me "trying to trivialize our sport". We were just talking about that the other night before the fights. One of the biggest regrets in my life was the night that punk got in my face and tried to intimidate me and I didn't take care of it right then and there. When he got in my face I got right back in his and begged him to swing because after he did that then my alibi would have been self defense. And I'll leave it at that. But other than that one situation everything else was business. And if you don't like it I really don't care because you're too insecure to sign your name to what you say about me. Go ahead and sign your name pal, I won't hold it against you. I would respect you a whole lot more if you did. Now go ahead and write about how I am shamelessly self promoting and blah, blah, blah. What kind of man are you if you take shots at me and won't even sign your name? I guess we will see.

Joe, would you box this guy you are calling out?

I give Jonathan Reid credit for honoring his commitment to fight George Rivera, albeit two years after the original date. (Reid was originally scheduled to fight Rivera, I think it was more than two years ago. Then Reid pulled out with an injury, and ended up fighting Jimmy Lange next.)

BTW, I have the photos of Johnny Lange and Joe Hensley “making nice” at the afterparty last Saturday night/Sunday morning. They are quite funny and not at all pretty.

The first knock down in the second round: Kennedy's knee and glove touched, I saw that but he started to get up, and by doing that you are putting yourself back in the line of fire…so I went for the kill...missed and the Ref stepped in. The Second knock down: He started to go down, he was in a squat...I saw that his knees were no where near the canvas and neither was his left hand, I could not see he his right hand from my line of sight...so I went in and hit him again...and when the Ref stepped in...I stopped. It's unfortunate, but I did nothing wrong from my point of view in the ring. Here a video link and you can see what I'm talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1odWafYyf8&feature=share

Joey Hensley's comments about Shah are revealing of a two-bit wannabe. The guy knows nothing about boxing. What a joke. Joey, please no more long-winded assinine posts.

Zain although it was not intentional the video proves it should be a NC

Anonymous said...

Actually, I enjoy Joe's posts, even though they could use some line breaks.

And Zain is a stand-up guy for entering this forum, posting his perspective, and signing his name.

What I found interesting about the Shah/Kennedy video was that the best view of the controversial last punch appeared to be Dave Holland's vantage point. I would love to be a lip reader and know what he was saying to his seatmate.

I don't think that the late hit was deliberate and I take Zain at his word. But if it were my call, I'd declare it a no-contest (as opposed to a DQ) and allow Kennedy the option of a rematch (which he might or might not take due to Shah's dominance on Saturday, late hit aside.)

ACW, the only way I can see it if that either one judge called one round even or the scores were mistabulated at ringside.

ACW said...

Gary-that makes sense. I had it 59-54, with Todd winning all 6 but getting knocked down.

Michael Stewart called out Jimmy Lange. George Rivera has called out Jimmy Lange in the past. I wouldn't mind seeing a Stewart vs. Rivera co-main event on a future card.

Anonymous said...

Listen, if Lange were to fight either one of these guys the fix would be in.They are both entirely to much for Lange.
Can you believe that the Lange camp tries to tell everybody that people come to see Jimmy. They come because it's the Patriot center. They call Jimmy a star of the series The Contender.Did he even win a fight on the show?

Anonymous said...

love him or hate him..people do come to see him. Im sure you've heard those crazy ass sounding ladies losing their minds when jimmy enters the ring. The only time during the night the whole audience stood up was when Jimmy scored that first knockdown.

Anonymous said...

"They call Jimmy a star of the series The Contender.Did he even win a fight on the show?

Yes, after losing to a roided-up Joey Gilbert, he was voted back as a "fan favorite," where he beat Tarick "The Arabian Prince" Salmaci.

It's not the Patriot Center that draws folks, it's Jimmmy. If all it took was the venue, every promoter would be using it, and paying fighters a lot less. But that's not the case.

Anonymous said...

Here is an honest assessment:

While Jimmy is rarely, if ever, the best fighter on the card, he is usually the most popular and that's why he is in the main event and is promoted over everyone else.

For example, I like Kimbo Slice and think he is a compelling character but I know he is a bum who would get smoked against any top level fighter. HOWEVER, I would rather watch one of his fights than a much more skilled fighter that I don't care about.

Within pro wrestling, Hulk Hogan is known as one of the worst in-ring performers EVER but I find his character compelling.

Same concept on a smaller scale.

Roided up.
what about the second fight at the Patriot Center.Whats your excuse for him getting slapped around by Gilbert that fight.
You keep referring to him as a star but he got beat easy on the contender and then was booted off.
Don't make those kind of exscuses
it only makes Lange look worse.
No doubt Lange has plenty of heart but his skills are not up to snuff and if he was fighting Rivera or Stewart and the fight was on the up and up Rivera would win a unanimous decision and stewart would stop Jimmy within four rounds. But anybody that knows boxing knows that Pappa would get to somebody and sweeten the kitty and make all kind of promises like he will give them
four or five wins on the next cards at the Patriot Centerif they just let Jimmy come back in the late rounds and stop them or at least knock them down a couple times.Everybody calls Jimmy the cash cow but the real deal is that johnny Lange is the head of the serpent

Joe Hensley said...

I did not say that. I can't believe that someone would go through the hassle of registering a blogger account with my name, then post under that name, all in an effort to make me look bad. You're a real loser pal. This is directed at the comment that says Joe Hensley "burry (which is misspelled by the way, that's bury) the hatchet with Johnny but I'm obliged to call them like I see them". If you don't see this picture beside my name I didn't say it.
