Douglas Advances, Russell Is Eliminated at US Olympic Trials!

A rough Day 2 for Beltway amateurs at the Men's US Olympic Trials in Mobile, AL. Only one local advanced to the next round in the Winner's bracket and one Beltway Boxer has already been eliminated from competition.

Antoine Douglas scored a nice victory in the 165-pound bracket, defeating 2008 Olympian Luis Arias of Milwaukee, WI, 27-12.

However, Gary Allen Russell's bid to follow his brother onto an Olympic team has ended without him getting into the ring. For the second straight day, Russell was disqualified because he couldn't make the 141-pound limit.

The other Beltway hopeful at 141 -- Michael Reed -- will also have to battle from the Challenger's bracket. Reed lost his second-round bout to Jamal Herring of Camp Lejeune, NC, 19-18.

In the 165-pound bracket, D'Mitrius Ballard lost a 20-8 decision to Jesse Hart of Philadelphia, PA.

Up at 108, Greg Outlaw lost a 21-12 decision to another 2008 Olympian, Louie Byrd of Denver, CO.

Both local 178-pounders are still in the competition. Jerry Odom scored a big victory in the Winner's bracket, defeating Siji Shabazz of Las Cruces, NM by a 32-19 decision. Shaborn Ryals won his first bout in the Challenger's bracket, defeating Robert Brant of Oakdale, MN, 20-10.

It is important for boxers not only to train hard enough to learn the skills necessary to defend and attack during a fight but to maintain a certain body weight. A boxer follows a number of strict routines to reach his target weight before a fight.

Boxers must complete the weigh in between 16 and 30 hours before the fight. The scale used is available to the boxers two hours before the weigh in. If one of the boxers fails to make weight, he has two hours to make the weight. A boxer who does not make weight can be fined, demoted or suspended. If a champion fails to make weight, the challenger wins the title by forfiet.

How ridiculous! One brother can't make weigh ins at the Olympic Games weigh in for cryin out loud! and the other can't make it for the trials! Move up in weight then!

Headline should read:
"Gary Allen Russell follows his brother's footsteps...they both can't make weight"

way to waste a trip, time, and money for everyone involved.

Luis Arias was not a 2008 Olympian

If you are DQ'd from a bout in double elimination isn't that just counted as one loss? Tha't surprised me too until I thougth about it. I don't think you would be DQ'd from the tournament right? If it's a "medical" DQ technically and you have another bout I would think you can box if you are "cleared" which in this case is listed as a medical and I'm not sure if there was some other "injury" that didn't allow him to box since it just says medical DQ. I don't think the rules allow you to treat that any differently than an injury.

Sect 107.15 (l) A boxer who is greater than two pounds over the weigh limit is disqualified without further recourse.

Lets just take a look what has happened when it comes down to it. Gary Russell was DQ'd because he was over two pounds heavy, therefore he lost the first match. They would put him in the challengers bracket just like everybody else who lost, but, because of the DQ, he should not be able to move into the challengers bracket. However, by putting him there, two things can happen, George Rincon can win on walkover, meaning they just put Russell's name there because no matter what Rincon was going to advance, or the other situation is that they let him continue and make the weight dismorning. I'm not sure if that's the case.
