August 27th A Big Boxing Day Along The Beltway!

Lot of boxing-themed action will be taking place on Saturday, August 27th. We already know about the Diva-Rize-N Promotions card at the DC Star and that would make a nice night cap for the other events taking place during the day.

One man who is a HUGE supporter of the Beltway Boxing scene is a man by the name of Al-Malik Farrakhan. He has helped promote cards in the area in tandem with Madness Connection, but more importantly, he comes out to every card in DC and shows his support for the boxers. A few years ago, Mr. Farrakhan organized a community event and parade to honor a number of our pro world champions.

Also, Mr. Farrakhan is a community activist -- the founder of Cease Fire: Don't Smoke the Brothers and Sisters, an organization dedicated to increase the peace and stop the violence in our community. Every year, Mr. Farrakhan's organization has a community cookout that features a card of amateur boxing, both are free and open to the public. The event will be held at the Upshur Recreation Center, located on 14th Street and Arkansas Avenue in Northwest DC. The event also calls for a six-month moratorium on the violence in the city. The cookout starts at noon and the boxing begins at 2:30.

Also on the 27th, the Washington, DC Boxing Hall of Fame will be having their annual Crab Feast at the newly-reopened Rosecroft Raceway, 6336 Rosecroft Drive in Fort Washington, MD. Rosecroft will be open for new racing business later this week and live racing is slated to resume this fall. Boxing will be a big part of their events as well, according to my sources.

The crab feast is an all you can eat and drink affair that will begin at one PM and go until four PM. Admission is $40 for adults and kids 12 and under are just $10. For more info, call 301-760-8746 or 301-881-6596.

Ballroom boxing got burned out. They just did not want to put on pro cards.

Maybe because people spent too much time complaining about the cards and not enough time supporting them with money so they can then put on even better cards.

Gary I usually agree with you on most but I have to disagree respectfully on this one, the crowd would spend if a product was put on, but these tight wads and I was one of them won't spend a nickel to see the statue of liberty crap barbwire. What is sad about this the most is the commission allowed this debaucle to happen.

Also I don't think the current crop of jackels would spend the money even if they made it, the worse of the bunch is this travesty promoting Saturday night

Maybe if these promoters would put some new people on the card and let them get a winning record and then fight the others with winning records that atleast would look better and become a better card. There is plenty of other fighters from MD, DE, VA, and DC. So whats wrong with that. Not the same people all the time. Whats your opinion on that Gary.

The questions then become:

1. Who are these "new people" and where are you getting them from?

2. Do you want your boxer to ultimately be the best in the Beltway or best in the world?

3. How much money are you going to spend to bring these "new people" in?

The bottom line is that this sport has boxers who are gatekeepers -- those who a prospect must beat to be a contender. Many of them have losing records. That's just the way the sport is.

Does the name Benji Singleton mean anything to you? He was from Charlotte, NC and he faced virtually every prospect and contender the Beltway had in the 90's. Yes, he had a well-under 500 record but he gave our boxers work. We had gatekeepers in our area like Alphonso Dyer and Horace Watterson during that time who served the same purpose in and out of the Beltway.

Good points, Gary. I'd add Reggie Strickland to that list, too. He retired 66-276-17 and was one of those gatekeepers who gave work to an awful lot of boxers. Remarkably, of those 276 losses, only 25 were by KO.

1. New people we would like to hear about and new faces also the key word. Giving them a chance.

2. These guys they keep putting on the beltway not even fighting in the u.s. let alone the world not even midwest nor west coast.

3. They can sell some tickets and plus there will probaly be the same or just as more of a crowd as these same fighters.

Next (Gateway keepers)- well let some of these undefeated fighters fight someone decent in Pa, NJ, NY to get their foot in the door.

Gary , Watterson and Dyer were stiffs, brought in to pad a record, give rounds. Gatekeepers have the ability to win, to act as a litmus test of whether someone is the real deal. Neither of those guys had the ability to hurt any fighter, much less beat the,. They were safe opponents, confidence builders.

That said, both these guys had tremendous heart, especially Dyer. He fought only prospects, guys who had winning records. In fact, he is the opposite of a guy like Jeter who only, ONLY fights stiffs.

Gary, explain to me how commissions give in to his insatiable desire to fight guys on skates? At this point, at his age he isn't a prospect, hens isn't an opponent. So why dont the commissions force him to fight a real threat?

Tony has the ability but he is afraid of losing.maybe when he got KO"D it scared him to death or
maybe he just enjoys beating up on people and doesn't want to get hit himself. That doesn't seem rite does it.Just for the record
Mr Jeter isn't alone. This area is full of those that have the same philosaphy about the sport.I don't agree that fighters should fight easy (and I meen easy) all the time but if they have an injury like a hangnail or cut theirself shaving or the barber cut their hair too short or something serious like that then an exception should be made for them and bring in someone who doesn't know a jab from a hook or his head gear from his jock strap.
Mr jeter along with countless others always seem to have these kind of injuries .
