Not to be outdone, Bedford, VA super middleweight Scott "Cujo" Sigmon has been selected as one of the top stories in Bedford, VA and THE top story by the Lynchburg News and Daily Advance in Lynchburg, VA.
Here's what the Bedford Bulletin said about their hometown hero:
"Boxing made a grand re-entry to our area thanks, in large part, to a couple of Bedford Guys. Local pugilist Scott "Cujo" Sigmon headlined fights at the Lynchburg Armory in April and in August. Both cards drew capacity crowds, as local fans were eager to give their support to a sport that has been absent from this region since 1977. Liberty High grad Joe Hensley was also key, from his position as fight promoter. But it was Cujo that won over the crowd as he won a decision over Toris "The Bull" Brewer in April. Then he dismantled "Nasty" Nick Schliech, before knocking him out in the third round in August. Both nights included great contests..."
By the way, Sigmon is indeed dropping down from light heavyweight to super middleweight this year.

It is terrific to see area newspapers support Sigmon and Tucker. Whether some of you feel that they are worth or not worth it means nothing. We are in the early stages of a huge boom in the sport of boxing and it is an indicator of very positive things to come that these fighters are getting this sort of local coverage. We are thankfully blessed by the greedy folks of the MMA world who have brought a lot of people out to the pugilistic arts, but have oversaturated the market and delivered lousy shows, so it has created many new fans of boxing. And if you hear from people that boxing is a dying sport, please set them straight. My new company, TKO Boxing has done thirty shows over the last 18 months and will do thirty in 2010, at locations all over the country. And the reason that we have been successful at it is that the fans have come out. We did 7000 in Reno, 5000 in Cincy and 5000 in York, Pa. With record number of buys for the big fights, and increasingly a world market for the top stars, we are entering a new golden age of the sport.

What were the attendance figures for the MMA show at Michael's?
I did not attend, but I think that they were reflective of what I said in my earlier post; ie. another instance of oversaturation.

With the exception of some of The Lange's Patriot Center shows, it's been a long time since the DC area has seen boxing numbers anywhere near those. Congrats!
Shit, there were more empty seats at Patriot Center than there were people at Langs shows. Those numbers are inflated worse than the Michelen Man!
Is the upcoming Ballroom Boxing show a TKO show or is it back to being promoted by the Wagners? I don't see it in TKO's website under upcoming events.

There you go again! Considering that the Patriot Center Capacity is roughly 12,000, you'd expect there to be more empty seats than full ones. (It's only about 10,000 for basketball because it doesn't have the floor seating that boxing does.)
Considering that part of the Patriot Center's fee is based on the announced number of seats (minus any comps,) no promoter is going to pay for thousands of extra seat premiums just to make their numbers look better.
People don't go to the fights in Lynchburg to see Cujo! We go to see fights. It wouldn't matter who was fighting we would be there, so please don't over do it.
BS! - Lang's numbers are definitely inflated! Call the Boing Commission and ask them what the figures are, it is indeed a matter of public record.
