F. Guerrero Wins NABO Title By Majority Decision!

Unbeaten middleweight Fernando Guerrero won a 10-round majority decision over Ossie Duran to capture the interim NABO Middleweight title in front of his home crowd at Arthur Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, MD.

Details on this card are sketchy at the moment, but WBOC TV in Salisbury says Guerrero was knocked down in the 10th round but was ahead far enough on two cards to win a decision. Guerrero won the bout by scores of 97-93, 96-94 and 95-95. Guerrero is now 16-0, 13 KO's while Duran, a resident of Paterson, NJ by way of Ghana, is now 23-8-2, nine KO's..

Guerrero's brother, Alex (2-0) won a cruiserweight bout over Rodricka Ray via four-round unanimous decision and DC lightweight Ty Barnett lost his first pro bout in a second-round TKO loss to Juan Santiago. Barnett is now 16-1-1, 11 KO's.

Also on the card, Baltimore's Omar Sims (3-1-3) survived two first-round knockdowns to battle to a four-round middleweight draw with Ken Dunham of Rock Hill, SC (6-10-1). Mechanicsville, VA cruiser Francois Ambang (2-4-1) also fought to a four-round draw with Ariel Espinal of Brooklyn, NY(6-10-3).

Looks like it was a tough fight. I knew Duran wouldn't be any pushover.

Is that true Ty Barnett got knocked out in the 2nd rd?

Anonymous said...

Welcome to the pro's Haedbangers. Ty you cant fight bums forever. Fernando you need to get that chin checked if you are going to fight that style.

Anonymous said...

Fernando fought a great fight, tough fight. Duran is durable and game. Duran's corner was drenching Duran to water down his trunks and the canvas and slow Fernando down, Panella put a stop to it quickly.

Fernando is the real deal, he can punch, take a punch and is in great shape. He got caught in the 10th round when he was screwing around, something he should stop. I know he is playing to the crowd, however the crowd will be there if he keeps winning. Hopefully he learned that disrespecting a professional fighter by clowning is a foolish game.

Ty Barnett got rocked at very end of 1st round by a tough kid who was in good shape. Ty, look at Vince Pettaway's record, an early ko isnt the end of a career. Learn from it, work harder and come back stronger. You have a lot of talent and time, don't pull a Jeter and hide for three years while your skills and heart erode.

Great card, great venue and a great job by the State Commission. We are lucky in Maryland to have a commission as dedicated to making competitive matches and putting on professional shows. 2009 is a special year for Maryland boxing.

There are those of you who will seize this opportunity to downplay Ty Barnett and Fernando. These are two guys from camps that are full of talent and I promise will return to the ring with a vengance
on their next fight. This is not a set back for Barnett it's just a little bump in the road that I know he will not let interfere with his career. And a knock down is not a knock out.Everyone knows that Fernando is on his way to
greatness

Anonymous said...

No disrespect, but I heard Fernando and his brother used to get RSC'd as amateurs on several occasions. Maybe it was just their style, but that doesn't speak much for the chin (I'm talking about the 2 older ones, not Alex). Any thoughts? This is real talk, not trying to bash.

We need 2 support our D.C. fighter's. All this back biting doesn't make sense. If u go anywhere else their area boxer's are put up on pedal stools, wether they win or loose, and they mostly loose! If they could buy them a win they would all chip in. As soon as one of our local guys looses. All hell breaks loose, kick 'em in the balls, gouge his eyes out, string him up on a cross! This is why its so hard for our Nation's Capitol fighter's, to get any recognition. Because we don't recognize them ourselves! That's right let's all stay at the bottom of the barrel together!

Guerrero is being brought along very nicely. He is a young fighter with loads of talent and charisma. He has a bright future ahead of him. I enjoyed watching him fight on Saturday, Duran was very tough. Kirkland didnt knock him out either. Best of luck Fernando!

It appears that the headbangers are taking a little heat right now but they aren't the only gym that takes heat from the cowards on this site. The spineless pukes that have a need to talk bad about some of the best boxing talent in the country don't discriminate against other clubs in the area. They share their hatred and jealously with all that try to make it in this busniess locally.
I think most of them do it because they can't do it themselves and can't stand the thought of somebody else accomplishing anything special in life that they can't do.
Everyone knows that Barnett and Fernando are something special in the sport so don't pay any attention to all the hate comments.
And to all you haters,
UP YOUR NOSE WITH A RUBBER HOSE JACK.

That was a very good fight between Guerrero and Duran, the "knockdown" was clearly a slip, however a weak punch did in fact land at the same time so it counted but trust me, the ring canvas was very wet all night. The canvas had to be wiped down with towels between rounds several times. Besides, Fernando was clearly winning the round anyway.
Once again Salisbury did itself proud with a great fan turnout, from my view inside the ring Shorebird Stadium looked and sounded great - way to go Salisbury - maybe we can do it again next year!
BTW, there are always a few haters, but the haters never get anywhere in the ring or for that matter in life, so take them with a grain of salt Fernando...
Thanks Again Salisbury,
J.D. Lyons

Was the attendance over 5,000? If so Fernando Guerrero is the unprecedented king of the boxing gate in the beltway area and beyond! I can't think of ANY shows that aren't big time world title fights that are bringing in more than 5,000 people. Well done Fernando!

it does amaze me how we try to bring down our fighters, fernando, fought a good fight, he trains hard, and remeber duran has never been stopped, the boy stepped up the comp and won he's on the right track, and lets remeber any fighter can have a bad night get caught with a punch or even loose a fight, then they can come back strong, ty is hell of a fighter period, and fernando, if you cant get in front of them, then stand to the side and support them, if you dont like them for whatever reason, go tell them and let the world know, and thats to any fighter or person, THE MECHANIC

All you Guerrero haters are morons!

Fernando is a sensational talent and a hero to many. He has the kind of fan support that some of the best fighters in the world don't have. He brings bigger crowds than many HBO fights!

In terms of the knockdown, it was definitely a slip. Guerrero has never legitimately been dropped.

Duran is a tough son of a gun anybody will tell you that including Fernando so give the guy credit for taking a tough fight.

I don't see Jargal or Jimmy Lange taking fights this tough.

Lets also look who else beat Duran recently... James Kirkland and David Lopez two of the top 10 fighters in their respective weight classes and both guys won close decisions.

Salisbury stand up!

A note to the haters that say Fernando is a joke - get in the ring with him, you won't think he's funny then. You don't win the National Amatuers without skills.

Let's see, with well over a half million in ticket sales so far, I'd say he is doing pretty damn well, how many fans come to see you? Not including your Mom I mean. Talk is cheap, get in the ring with him...

J.D. Lyons said...

P.S. --- I noticed the haters don't have the guts to sign their name to their post, so we already know you don't have the guts to actualy get in the ring with Fernando. Pretty much makes you a loser in my book...

i agree fernando guerrero is a over rate boxer.he havent fought nobody really.and to disagree with him u got 2 be a hater ,tells me where his real fans an manager heart is.he definatly dont inpress or scare me.get over it he aint nobody in my book, periodagree to disagree.

Anonymous said...

Fernando is what he is. A good prospect who will have to prove in a little while that he belongs with the best. But right now is a time for him to learn how to fight at the pro level. No reason to rush him and have him fight the best. Makes no sense if you are managing his career. If hes still fighting stiffs after 25 fights then yea you have more of a right to complain but not right now. Duran wasnt that good but he is durable. And rosado was also a good prospect having won some tough fights himself.

And on a side not to j.d lyons. I always found it funny when people would say oh i bet you wouldnt get in the ring with so and so. why do u have to be able to get in the ring with guerrero to criticise him. Like if someone actually did sign there name on the post its laughable to think fernando would get in the ring with them.

Anonymous said...

i to not inpress with guerrero.he needs to fight real boxers not old ,losing record or down the hill boxers.he is getting old we all know the sport of boxing.and his team an fans are bums if u disagree with them that make u a real loser.welcome to the real boxing world.stop fighting b.u.m.s. and o.l.d.guys pan using alot of b.s. on the blogs .come to ny ,dc philly an fight.chump

Isn't JD Lyons the clown that is the ring guy on all of Guerrero's shows? I think he is. He has got to be the worst announcer I have seen in this sport and I have watched boxing around here for 25 plus years. He sounds like some strip club deejay that you can hardly understand and looks weathered and drunk all the time.

Back to topic though, the Guerrero kid is world class and his management team has done a good job with him.

jd lyons said...

Well, well, I see I have a critic of my work in the ring too. It's funny you say you can't understand me, when so many people come up to me and tell me they really enjoyed my work each and every show, plus, having seen videos of our events in Salisbury on YouTube, even hand held video cameras from the fans picked my voice up quite well. Perhaps a hearing test is in order for you. Then again, not all venue sound systems are the greatest in the world, so perhaps your seating wasn't in an area covered by the sound system too well. However, a couple of things here.
#1 I rarely drink alcohol at all, maybe 3 or 4 times a year if that and WOULD NEVER and HAVE NEVER drank before a show in my entire career. To suggest that I was drunk in the ring is laughable, and ANYONE WHO KNOWS ME - KNOWS BETTER - I AM WAY TOO PROFESSIONAL THAN THAT. #2 "looking worn" as you put it, lol, at almost 48 years old and having endured the pressures of live t.v. and BIG TIME events up there in front of THOUSANDS of people as many times as l have, I have earned the greys in my hair thank you very much. Besides, at around the corner from 50 years old, who doesn't have some miles on them?

I take pride in the job I do, and consider the job to be a time honored tradition. It's my job to be the host of the show, to try and get the crowd involved as much as possible. If you want to call that being a "clown" so be it. I also strive to give each and every fighter, regardless of their record, an introduction as if he or she was the Undisputed Champion of the World. In event after event, I try to make every Promoters' show be the best it can be on my end, and that is the bottom line - and I stake mt reputation on it every time I step in the ring.

This job comes with both praise and with critics, and I accept both, as l have been on the mic for decades, and spent years as an On Air Talent in Radio. I have been there, done that, seen that, heard that in this biz.

In this particular case, you sound to me like you are a local Ring Announcer yourself, and one who is just miffed at not getting to work Fernandos' shows. I don't blame you for that -- Salisbury is an AWESOME place, and the fight fans there are some of THE BEST FIGHT FANS to be found in the country!
Ring Announcer,
J.D. Lyons

JD - Don't go thumpming your chest and calling out our local ring announcers. We have the best around in any town and that is the one and only Henry "Discombobulating" Jones. We also have "The Auctioneer" Brad Dudley and "The Singing Ring Announcer" Mr. Freddy C. You're okay but you don't hold a candle to this trio. You're hooked in with the promoter and that's a good thing for you. But compared to these guys, you just don't compare.

A Longtime Beltway Boxing Fan

jd lyons said...

No chest thumping going on, not my style, just responding to something written about me, which will end with this reply. I have seen Henry's work, and I know Brad, is a nice guy, not familiar with Freddy C. - no direspect to any of them.

I say keep doing ur thing Jd. ur a good announcer. We also have one of the best announcer's right here on this site and his name is the one and only Gary D, the best in the business.

Anonymous said...

gary digitcal the best

Anonymous said...

JD -

What's that mean? You have seen Henry's work? That's not a real glowing endorsement of our own Discombobulating Jones. The man is a wordsmith nonpariel and is smooth as jazz piano. He's the best around. Brad Dudley is a professional auctioneer and the words just flow like a real pro. And Freddy C can sing the national anthem like Frank Sinatra and then call the main event without missing a beat. And I almost forgot, TNT Crawford ain't bad either! You're not bad, you kind of remind me a little of a more southern version of Pat O'Malley who everyone will attest to ain't bad himself but he's not up there with Jones, Dudley, Freddy C, or even TNT.

I think jones is real good, all the other's r good' but for my money Gary D is the best ring announcer in this area. He has the clearest and smoothest voice i have ever heard he should be a radio dj.

Thanks for the kind words and I also enjoy JD's work!

I would definitely put our corps of ring announcers up against anybodys!
