Beltway Sends Seven to National Golden Gloves!

There will be seven Beltway amateurs that will make the trip to Salt Lake City, UT and next month's National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions by virtue of their victories tonight during the Regional Golden Gloves Championships at the Waldorf Jaycees Community Center in Waldorf, MD.

In the 152-pound championship, David Grayton of DC won a tough decision over Moshea Aleem of Richmond, VA in what many considered the bout of the night. Both young men traded very well and often during this bout. Grayton won the Truman E. Tuttle Memorial Award as the Outstanding Boxer of the tournament.

Suitland, MD's Antonio Magruder captured the 119-pound title by RSC-1 over Keenan Williams of Virginia Beach, VA. Magruder was extremely sharp with his shots during this contest.

White Marsh, MD's Travis Peterkin won the 165-pound championship by decision over Lamar Russ of Fayetteville, NC. Peterkin got off to a slow start but picked up the pace in the second and third rounds to win the title. Former WBO Heavyweight champion and 1988 Olympic Gold Medalist "Merciless" Ray Mercer worked Russ's corner.

Delmar, MD's Alexis Guerrero won the 201-pound title by decision over Bryant Tune of the United States Marine Corps (USMC)/Camp Lejeune, NC. Guerrero was extremely sharp in this bout, repeatedly beating Tune to the punch.

Three other Beltway Boxers won championships by walkover: Erick Cruz of DC (112 pounds), Landover, MD's Kevin Rivers (125 pounds) and Thomas Williams of Fort Washington, MD (178 pounds).

Three boxers from the Virginia/North Carolina region will head to the Nationals. Willie Jones of Burlington, NC provided the highlight of the night in the 141-pound championship using one devastating left hook to stop Marlon Bolen of Bowie, MD in the first round. Jones's punch sent Bolen crashing to the canvas in the first minute of the round.

In the 132-pound title bout, Todd Dekinderen of the USMC survived the loss of two points to defeat Elvis Medrano of DC by decision. Dekinderen had two points taken away for hitting behind the head. Medrano lost a point for holding.

In the 201+-pound contest Jerry Forrest of Newport News, VA won by decision over Ron Gamble of Laurel, MD in a really spirited bout.

The National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions will take place May 3-10 in Salt Lake City, UT.

In the Novice Division Championships, Beltway Boxers took eight of the nine championships. Here are the results:

119 pounds: Edgar Llivichuzhca (Dundalk, MD) defeated Frazier Hunter (Richmond, VA)

125 pounds: Paul Jerry (Hillcrest Heights, MD) defeated Magdiel Matias (USMC/Camp Lejeune). This was a highly controversial decision.

132 pounds: Seth Billups (Washington, DC) defeated Elias Sanchez (USMC/Camp Lejeune)

141 pounds: Chris Hernandez (Largo, MD) defeated Kirabel Tegbaru (Springfield, VA) This was the best bout of the novice division.

152 pounds: Marques Taylor (Temple Hills, MD) won by walkover versus Ricky Blake (Norfolk, VA)

165 pounds: Reginald Lucas (Baltimore, MD) defeated Jorge Valencia (USMC/Camp Lejeune)

178 pounds: Manuel Ramos (Leesburg, VA) won by walkover versus Antwan Ward (Newport News, VA)

201 pounds: Ben July (Suitland, MD) won by walkover versus Anthony Aguilar (Norfolk, VA)

201+ pounds: Dennis Benson (Norfolk, VA) RSC-2 over Antonio Williams (Washington, DC)

last night was a historical night between md/dc and nc/va. many new rivalaries were introduced. drayton vs aleem was a battle of conditioning between 2 great athletes. jones vs bolen is a rematch waiting 2 happen. peterkin vs russ was a battle russ thought he had in the bag. russ bout appeared on youtube and he put peterkins bout on his tube page.... then he removed it. russ tried to brawl...big mistake. peterkin out manned him. too strong 4 the veteran.

Marlon Bolon should never box again. He has to suffer brain damaga from a shot like that. Wilbur Nicklson should have none better than to allow him to box Willie KO Artist Jones.damn coaches need to look out for these kids. Marlon's Uncle is going to sue Wilburs dumb ass for everything he gots. Including that 1983 GMC pick up truck.

anonymous said...

alex guerrero really gave it to tune last nite. nc was trash talking more than any one. sarge and ray mercer told russ to take peterkin in deep waters, and drown him, but it was peterkin who won. willie jones is now the best fighter in nc. russ passed him that mantle last night after his team had him celebrate BEFORE the bout.

Anonymous said...

I spoke with Willie Jones & he and his family pray that Marlon Bolen is ok! Willie comment that he got down one knee and started praying for Bolen once he saw that he was hurt.

anonymous said...

thats nice the jones family extended prayer to bolen. i was watching youtube today and i seen lamar russ standing over willie after he knocked him out. celebrating. profiling. that made me think nc stood for no class. nc has good people. good job jones.

anonymous said...

thats willie nelson who got knocked out by russ.

Anonymous said...

i'm from DC but what are you talking about Russ wasn't really profiling or anyting. I've seen way worse around here. He just went over to his corner. . .AND more importantly that wasn't Willie Jones like the person said above. . . it was Willie Nelson, who is a good boxer too.

I didn't really see anything wrong with what Russ did in that bout online and also all the great champs that will be in Utah will get rid of all the pretenders - the competition is just beginning now.

anonymous said...

you know what, you right russ didnt show boat. russ is a top fighter who earned respect thru the years. dont take everything personally. many people will take russ on their side to go in the foxhole to do battle. but the person who claimed they from dc may not be from dc. people from dc/md or nc/va have real fighters, not pretenders. i would never call these kids pretenders, even if i talk smack. stay cool, hater. russ will be fine. kid is a fighter.

anonymous said...

no one never said russ ko willie jones. they just put willie. every one knows thats willie nelson, not the singer, but the boxer. moshea aleem recently beat him also. nelson also went to the east central regionals. made it to the finals.

Anonymous said...

can you read?? I didn't hate on anyone or call anyone from DC or NC anything. I SAID that in Utah, all the pretenders will come to light and if you've been the the national Golden Gloves you would know what the hell I'm talking about. There are definitely pretenders that get there without fighting AT ALL! There are many unopposed champions that get the the Tournament of Champions that have no business there. . .and it quickly comes to light. That is what I was saying and I AM FROM DC and guess what?? There are pretenders everywhere - even here in DC.

Anonymous said...

my bad, but the only willie that we had been talking about from the first post was Willie Jones. You're right they didn't say "Jones", but didn't say "Nelson" either - so I assumed. . .Both Willie's are good boxer -

anonymous said...

i see we are all on the same page here. we are the bloggers here, which makes us media type. we agree, we disagree, its all in the game yo. i would like to recap the fights friday night. what you guys think? i like forrest v gamble. it was a good fight.

anonymous said...

you know i think, quiet as kept, the money fight was peterkin v russ. both fighters snuck up on each other. russ dominated his region for a while peterkin presents a new challenge for him. both kids are college students and their rivalry is good for amateur boxing down here. ask these kids how they manage to go to school, work, and box. its not easy. whether its the amateurs or the pros they will meet again. and i wanna be there to see it.

anonymous said...

david grayton is a bad boy. good fighter. the fox fight seems so long ago. good luck to all fighters going to the nationals. this is not a party. this is where your experience kicks in. this is where you learn, especially if this is your first time. you are fighting gg champs from all over. but remember, you guys are champs too.

anonymous said...

are some of these bouts gonna be on dc amateur boxing?

Anonymous said...

no bouts on DCAB - but you can submit any vids that you have to the email on the home page and they'll get added

anonymous said...

friday night was a great night of boxing for the east central region. willie jones shocked everyone, guerrero did his thing, grayton and aleem was a war, and peterkin and russ wore each ohter out to the very end. russ #5 in the nation and peterkin hung tough. jerry forrest made it out. he had joey daweyko hurt in the east centrals. new leaders. new time. new age. new era.

anonymous said...

forrest and dawijko fought in the usa east central regionals in west virginia forrest did land a nice punch. mcgruder is a wild card. he should do well

anonymous said...

all due respect to willie jones but gary russell wasnt there. but he got the job done.

anonymous said...

thomas williams was supposed to fight monreco. what happened? did they have anyone to replace him?

Anonymous said...

Your right Gary Russell wasn"t their why is that?

So what are you assuming?

anonymous said...

can willie jones beat gary allen russell? thats the question? i am waiting for a response.

Anonymous said...

I was told that Monreco twisted his knee on the day before the event getting ready to leave for the event.

I've seen that kid Monreco box in D.C. at Buddy"s show a while back and he almost stopped Adrian Davis kid Dameion Butler. Thomas should be happy he gets to advance with a walkover because that would have been a tough fight for him. I think Monreco and Willie Jones are from the same camp he also wears a gold uniform.

Its only one way to find out if Willie Jones can beat Gary Russell, and lets hope that he don't have to tie his shoe or adjust his head gear like when he fought my boy Manny.

anonymous said...

like that, like that. at least you didnt back down. willie jones is capable of being mentioned along the lines of being on the other side of the ring of gary russell. keep your eyes of this one bloggers.

anonymous said...

jones v russell isnt happening anytime soon. what about lamar russ, ranked 5th. he remains a leader in nc, but what happened? i think he tried the man vs boy game vs peterkin and that wore him out. russ got hurt also. he came out strong early but the kid got him after that early start.

Question: Can some one tell me what is the criteria for winning the Outstanding Boxer of the tournament award, because I was at the VA/NC Gloves and I also attended the tournament fights Friday night and by far that kid Willie Jones was the most Outstanding Boxer in both events. He fought in VA twice and he almost stopped a kid his first night of fighting in the VA/NC Gloves and on the second night he stopped a kid from the marines in the 3rd round of a tough fight in which the kid received 8 stiches above his eye. The award was given to a kid from VA, then he comes to Maryland and brutally KO's a kid from Maryland and he did not receive the award, how does that happen? is the award a hometown favoritism award? I have been in boxing for 25 years and have seen it all, that kid really put on a performance. Are we in the business of grooming boxers for the Olympics or are we continuing to be baby sitters for our area fighters? No disrespect to the kids that won the award but that Jones kid did it with class and the way he was trained to do it, remember we are in the HURT BUSINESS. If anybody knows how to get in touch with that kid Jones please have him contact me at gooddeals@live.com we would like to reward him his just due.

anonymous said...

i dont think jones is being overlooked. he is being underestimated. kid is good. he will get his due. is russ going pro this year? how old is he?

Anonymous said...

those were some good bouts, but lets remember most of these guy's were boxer's that lost in the usa tournament. This means that jones wont see russell unless he win's in the real tournament. The usa tournament is where u will get the number 1, 2, and 3 boxer's in the country. The golden glove's winner will only be ranked as high as 6th, that's not good

Anonymous said...

jones had to much experience for bolen, he's been boxing since he was 10. It seems like the guy's who star early in the junior's do much better when they turn open

Anonymous said...

golden gloves does not get you ranked by usab. It does not give winners a berth in the us championships like it has in the past. That definitely takes away from impact of winning this tourny. The USA tourny pays winners cash money for a year so IMO that is a more important and more impactful victory. A lot of these JOs have 100-200 bouts by the time they go open. Definitely makes a difference as there are of first year Open boxers all over the US going to this years Tournament of Champions in Utah.

Anonymous said...

Thats not true Jones did not start boxing at 10 he was 14 years old when he started fighting, his second and 3rd fights were against D.C. fighters. Their team used to come to D.C. to fight all the time. I remember him because he all ways wanted to fight our best boxers in his weight class, I told him then that if he continues boxing that he was going to be one of the kids that people in the boxing game would be talking about with the great ones from D.C.

3 boxers from dc/md won the md/nc gg regionals and the usa regionals. elvis came within 1 bout and they would have 4. these young fighters earned it and one, thomas williams might be going pro.

Anonymous said...

Why is that we try to water down other people accomplisments? The National GG and US Championsips are both big tournaments. We have fighters all over the US competing in both tournaments. The fighters that fought in our regional GG are "Champions." They didn't pick and choose their opponents. They fought whom was before them. Considering all the fighters in the USA getting rank is big within it self...
The House of fighters DC....

anonymous said...

correct, all boxers who won both tournaments earned it and one boxer beat a ranked fighter to get in the gg nationals. these fighters earned the right to represent the east central.

anonymous said...

whats next for lamar russ? i know the pros is an option for him. he had a tough bout friday. at the end of the 2nd round he could barely stand in his corner. he got hurt a few times, but he hung in there. he had ray mercer by his side. has the willie jones win over shadow the russ loss? i think bloggers wanna know more about russ. he was favored in a very expected tough bout.

anonymous said...

russ is in jepordy of losing his ranking. he jumped on his man early but he got hurt in one of them exchanges, and he was holding. both held but russ held more. was they over confident? doubt it, but you never know. sarge and ray mercer didnt bring their tiger to lose, thats for sure.

anonymous said...

lamar and his camp peaked in va with his ko of willie nelson and his victory vs pablo velez. sarge had him primed. got a hero cheer before his bout. ray mercer getting handshakes. sarge with his hall of fame smile. they were ready for just rewards. wow, tough loss. the whole nc/va/usmc team was shocked. good bout. dave sewell got this one. big win for charm city.

Anonymous said...

nobody is trying to water down anything, but it is what it is. Now i will say thier are some guy's that won the area, and the regional in the usa, and then lost in the gg. So both tournament's r good. But to me it seem's like the best competition was in the usa's. And by the way Jones has been boxing for a while he boxed in the silver gloves atleast 3 times which would mean he was atleast 12 or 13 when he started

anonymous said...

but nobody is talking about jones. the topic is lamar russ. who is trying to hide him? no disrespect but he is being called to the front.

anonymous said...

quote from lamar russ to the charlotte observer after beating alan brady. "every year i have a reputation to uphold. i cant be beat, i wont be beat, and i cant be outworked." russ always accepted his challenges.

Z-Man said...

Willie Jones cannot be beat right now. He is a promoters dream. He not only would beat most boxers at 141 lbs but would KO them easly. Most did not box in the gloves so they could avoid Willie Jones. I was there in Tenn. when Willie ko'd 3 in 3 days.

anonymous said...

lamar russ was a promoters dream also. we will see. it seems liks mr. jones is nc hottest guy now.

anonymous said...

grayton deserved the outstanding boxer award. kid hung tough. kevin rivers is adding to his already impressive resume. he should do well in the nationals. willie jones is the best nc fighter. he proved his worth. lamar russ? well, he is no willie jones, thats for sure.

anonymous said...

i think russ knows the rug was pulled from under him. the pressure is on him now to win the usa regional in florida, or turn pro. the clocks ticking.

Anonymous said...

D.C. AND MARYLAND FIGHTERS ARE OVERRATED DUE TO THEM USING DIFFERENT PASSBOOKS, DIFFERENT WEIGHTS, AND MIX MATCHED BOUTS, POOR JUDGING AND REF TACTICS TO GAIN ADVANTAGES. WHEN MATCHED AGAINST THE BEST THEY DO poorly.

MAD-DOG from VA

anonymous said...

lets see, kevin rivers beat raul lopez in the pals, did his thing 4 yrs. dominic wade, lets not go there. travis peterkin, ok beat steve geffrard in the augustas then got robbed big time in the rematch in the silver gloves. kevin rivers getting robbed in the 06 silver gloves in the semis and raul lopez won avoiding rivers in the finals match. grayton, go ahead fight him. medrano will return. back to peterkin, who has been robbed in tournaments, people know, will fight you, no matter how good you think you are. his amateur box rec should have more bouts. russ has a military championship on his rec and thats not national. peterkin might have 15-25 jr. NATIONAL bouts. so does willie jones. these are some of the kids who are underestimated. mcgruder. future champ. trust me. gary russell. the legend grows in that family. all day. i still respect nc. willie jones, hold em down. no disrespect to russ, who is athlete of the week on usa boxing, you must have known about that. like the 1st comment said, you thought you had it in the bag. but you didnt mention friday's butt whopping. you had you national locked and sealed. you might not even make the usa nationals. many boxers know, like peterkin, boxing has its highs and lows, so they will do whatever it takes to get rid of you. usa boxing taught him that. nc and usa boxing taught you to expect to beat bums like terry roscoe, and alan brady.WILLIE JONES.

Anonymous said...

a mad-dog name some va. boxer's on the national scene now. pva boxer's are ranked in almost every weight.

Anonymous said...

Who ever said willie jones is the best 141lb must be kidding what did he do in the usa tourny. He isn't in the top 10# yet

anonymous said...

willie jones won the region. thats it. all the winners are #1 in the REGION. willie jones is #1 in nc. if not, then who is????

anonymous said...

willie jones, willie jones. lamar is still #1. my boy did his thing for years. stopped many dudes. lamar, al smith, and even ray mercer have a power house team in nc. watch and see. lamar human highlight reels will be back.

anonymous said...

mad dog. what kind of name is that in 2009? call your self mad rapper, or mad boxing fan. and mad dog is fake because i thought the best boxers come from va. but we do like jerry forrest, on a serious note.

Anonymous said...

Why don't you leave the Jones kid alone. He is not asking for any of this bullshit that is being posted good or bad. Let the kid be!! This kid is very quite with alot of respect, seems too be a good person. Let him be!!

Anonymous said...

Alan Russell will stop Willie Jones easily!

anonymous said...

i dont think no one is bothering willie jones. we just have no one else to talk about from nc. lamar russ is the story in nc, he just had a bad night friday.

Anonymous said...

willie is only 17 and is the next roy jones jr.

anonymous said...

they should have let nc do their regionals in tenneesse like always. when they win, they showboat, razzle dazzle, ect. they talked bad about bolen, didnt care to ask was he ok. he was hurt. boxers or coaches should never laugh at a fighter in that situation. then lamar russ loses on points and its quiet. and yes, he did showboat his ko of willie nelson on youtube. you heard his crowd. NC, NC. bolen took hits on this blog while russ gets a free pass. whatever. god bless mr. bolen, i hope he makes it back.

anonymous said...

lamar russ is over rated. 22yrs old. biggest wins: coy lambert, alan brady. all you have to do is pressure him, ask jonathan cepeda, chris chapman, shawn porter. had russ won, a parade would be held at chuck e cheese, where he works.

anonymous said...

willie jones the next roy jones? i thought lamar russ was the next roy toy.

anonymous said...

we all thought russ was gonna win, BIG. thats why i guess he put his 2bouts in va on youtube a week b4 his regional bout. to scare his opponent. remember the pittsburgh steelers did that superbowl video, and lost b4 the superbowl?

Anonymous said...

Willie Jones just turned 17 so expect to hear a lot about this kid in the future, please find something else to talk about and dont let your conversation about Willie Jones consume you. Willie is a humble kid that just wants to fight the best and become the best so if you have boxers that you consider to be good then let us prove it without a shadow of doubt. See you guys at the National Golden Gloves

anonymous said...

ok no more willie jones, this is the lamar russ show. athlete of the week, nc top boxer, whatever else. whats next, leave him alone? lamar russ is the hot topic now. lamar russ drives the bus. lamar russ is the way it should be.

anonymous said...

lamar thought the fight was his. usa boxing athlete of the week. sources say he was ready to diss the kid he fought, embarrass him in the ring and on the internet. everyone on his team told him to whip on the young boy.

anonymous said...

lamar russ missed his buss.

anonymous said...

ok, this is the end of the nc/md rivalry as both places must come together to win the nationals. willie jones good luck, marlon bolen, we love you man. mcgruder, do your thing, todd dekinderen we wish you the best. kevin rivers is back for more. alexis guerrero, keep up the good work, jerry forrest, good job. grayton, outstanding job thats why you won the trophy. peterkin toughed it out, and the rest of this team isnt bad....p.s. all respect to lamar russ. you have set an example for other young for many yrs. you is truly a class act. i hope bolen stays strong. good luck boxers.

Anonymous said...

Let's forget about Lamar russ. He isn't goin to the nationals. And she have talked to much about willie jones. It was just a good punch. Let's talk about our beltway boxers who u think have a good chance at winning the nationals. I like the kevin rivers kid and Thomas Williams for sure. Grayton has a good chance at going in the later rounds of the tournament!!!!!!!

hurt said...

U SHOULDNT HAV BEEN PRESS TO GET SUM MARLON. U DESRVED IT. B TRU 2 THOSE WHO R TRU 2 U BOWIE BOY

anonymous said...

seen the bout with lamar russ. good bout. russ lost by a slim margin, but the decision was correct. the difference was russ was moved by power shots and his straight rights never moved the other kid. russ was staggered quite a few times. great championship bout.

bulletin: did any one hear jesse hart from philly boxes out of marquette and got knocked out in the 1st round by luis arias? i know his brother chip must not be happy.

anonymous said...

hart v arias fought in the golden gloves in the wisconsin and michigan area. jesse goes to school up there. jesse left chip before after a loss, and left him again to go to marquette and gets ko'd. turn pro jesse, turn pro. run jesse run.

Anonymous said...

that arias kid is stiil rolling i see. He is the number 1# 165lb in the us

anonymous said...

arias rolled jesse hart out the front door. jesse was never much to me, just flash. those skinny legs trying to hold 165lbs, at 6'4 has got old. tyrell biggs wannabe.
