Quarterfinal Action Complete at Washington Golden Gloves!

The action has started to heat up at the Washington Golden Gloves Championship Tournament as we get closer to the Washington-area finals on Friday, March 27 in Waldorf, MD.

Here are the results from tonight's quarterfinal action at the Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Center in Palmer Park, MD:

Junior Division

15-16, 156-pound championship: Demond Nicholson (Cherry Lane) defeated Andres Perdomo (Nomis)

Novice Division

132 pounds: Cortland Perkins (Upton) defeated Hlan Thaw (Loch Raven)

141 pounds: Deamonte Green (Nomis) defeated Onyelechi Nudka (Round One)

152 pounds: Marques Taylor (Tony's Gym) RSC-2 over Jose Murphy (Sugar Ray Leonard Center)

201 pounds: Ben July (Round One) RSC-3 over Nyonteh Sipply (Loch Raven)

Open Division

132 pounds: Joel Young (Keystone) defeated Jarbi Melvin (Down Under)

141 pounds: Marlon Bolen (Cherry Lane) defeated Edwin Reyes (Round One)

152 pounds: David Grayton (Headbangers) defeated Damont Giddins (Down Under)

152 pounds: Tyrell Newton (Dream Team) defeated Kenneth Browne (Keely's Boxing Gym)

165 pounds: Travis Peterkin (Charm City) defeated Jarrett Hurd (Hillcrest)

178 pounds: Mario Murphy (Sugar Ray Leonard Center) defeated Sulleman Harrington (Hillcrest)

178 pounds: Thomas Williams (Cherry Lane) defeated Dominic Williamson (Upton)

201 pounds: Mario Flores (Keely's Boxing Gym) defeated Alex Guerrero (Main Street Gym)

The 201-pound open bout closed tonight's action and the bout was not only the best bout of the night, but probably the best bout of the tournament so far. Both guys landed standing eight counts and landed tremendous blows throughout the contest. The decision of the judges possibly could have come down to Guerrero losing a point for spitting out his mouthpiece in the second round.

The two warriors received a much-deserved standing ovation after the bout was over. Because of the victory, Flores has advanced to the finals that will take place on Friday, March 27 at the Waldorf Jaycees Community Center in Waldorf, MD.

But first, there are the semi-finals that will take place at the Sugar Ray Leonard Center on Saturday, March 21 at 7:30 PM.

that was a good fight with day day. thanks DC and PG. it would of been a better fight if i didn't run out of gas. no excuses he won. trust and beleive i will be back stronger and better next time with a win on my side, Damont Giddins

I have to agree that the Big "Little Brother" Guerrero fight was the most exiting fight I've seen at this year's GGs. Not a technical boxing match, more of a slugfest with both boxers landing big shots - could have gone either way and I'm not sure how much 1pt really mattered in that one. Great job by both boxers. I hope next weeks fights are even better since they are the semis.

There may not be a whole lot of 119 pounders so Antonio and/or Marcus may go this week. We'll find out when the bout sheet comes down in the middle of the week.

why didn't dusty fight the kid from down under, Rick is Dusty not fighting thats a fight I wanted to see

Anonymous said...

Those were good fights last night from the first nd beginning but marlen bolen looked beautifil against edin reyes

the 1st fight was okay between the two Juniors i have seen that kid Demond Nicholosn fight a couple times to he's been around a little while

Anonymous said...

ric sambrea from ocean city will be 17 april 17th. dusty will be 14 this month. kids must be 24 months within age. they will probably box in the jo's this year.

Anonymous said...

bullshit! if one of them is 17, he is now open.

Anonymous said...

last I checked it isn't April, it says he WILL NOT be 17 YET.

flores and guerrero was something 2 see and peterkin vs hurd was a great bout. peterkin looked like little hagler in there and the ref did a great job gaining control of a hotly contested rematch from 2yrs ago which peterkin won. the ref let the boxers decide their fate and both boxers have alot of respect and admiration 4 each other....till they meet again.

Anonymous said...

thier will be no 119lb. this year we only have 2 in the area right now. And marcus is getting ready for the usa nationals. Which by the way is the most important tournament in the country

Anonymous said...

we also wont be seeing one of the best 141's in the country, so that division is tainted, and we wont be seeing one of the top 152's either. Tez Fox and David Grayton should be should be be a great championship though

anonymous said...

peterkin did his thing last night but word around the fights last night was marvin from upton wants a rematch himself. peterkin is from charm city maxell got him. MARVIN WANT THAT REMATCH.

anonymous said...

it seems like tez fox been around 4ever and that is going 2 be the difference between him and day day

anonymous said...

anyone has info on the 1st fight between marvin and peterkin? why isnt marvin in the tournaments? he could be fighting peterkin there.

anonymous said...

who the heck is marvin? upton do have a 178 guy who gave thomas williams a tough bout last nite. thomas showed true grit. good bout guys.

anonymous said...

damont giddens have nothing 2 be ashamed of. day day was on his game last nite. damont should fight 141. hold ya head homey

anonymous said...

peterkin hurd was the war of the night. these combatants gave everything they had and more but in the end peterkin had much more in his tank. this skinny kid fights hard. i like his toughness. does he fite next week?

Anonymous said...

peterkin v hurd was the what? Peterkin beat him badly. Jared needs to step up a little bit and Peterkin showed that. Hurd spent most of the 3rd round in the corner, clearly overmatched. The good thing for some people is that you can say anything on a blog with no video, but anybody there last night saw what I saw.

Peterkin had a great straight cross, but even when he let his hands go, he was wide open. That's not going to work against a better boxer. . .time will tell.

anonymous said...

peterkin looked good last nite. nobody thought he was gonna dominate jared like that. the ref could have done a better job not involving himself in the bout. it looked like he was after peterkin. but then he got after jared. 2 much referee work. but then i am not a ref so i can be wrong.

anonymous said...

who else is 165 open?

Anonymous said...

peterkin is from Brooklyn right? When did he move down here?

Anonymous said...

peterkin did good with hurd, but lets not get beside ourselves, to be a open fighter he still threw wild punches and had to be betold not to throw any hooks because he slaps a lot, thats why the ref. had to get involved. It will be tough with a good boxer, he needs to sharpen up his punches

anonymous said...

lot of good bouts were at the srl gym. flores and day day shined. peterkin did good also. keep your head up peterkin you made a good adjustment down here. welcome to beltway boxing we tell you if you do good or bad. plain and simple. you a good kid, do your thing. kids stay in the amateurs to improve on their mistakes. good luck with your career. just listen.

anonymous said...

i talked to peterkin the other nite. i call him travis, by his first name. he is a smart kid, a college student who is willing to stay in the amateurs to improve his game. he is a STRONG kid. peterkin, little hagler, whatever you call him will be fine. he is a different animal than a lot of fighters.

anonymous said...

joel young and jabri fought a good fight also. i like both guys, hated to see one lose. did you say ricky sambree is 25yrs old still in the juniors? just joking. thomas williams had a tough one. did he get knocked down with a body shot? i went to my car when that happened.

anonymous said...

peterkin doesnt call himself little hagler. where that come from?

anonymous said...

did someone say jared hurd is not good? i really think this kid can fight. still do.

anonymous said...

jared will be fine. only he knows what happened. to say he isnt good enough, no one else had a 165 for this kid. jared is young. let him study his bout on dc blog spot. he went to the nationals year.

anonymous said...

jared went to the national gg in 2008

anonymous said...

da da looked good but damont giddens is really 141. cant wait to see tez fox vs grayton. day day is very capable of putting forth a great effort and we know fox is bringing his game.

anonymous said...

the ref in the peterkin v hurd bout did a GREAT job. peterkin is still new around here and he needs to understand the way we do things. he handled his warnings respectfully and its good to see that. sportsmanship is important in ANY sport. peterkin showed class, didnt argue and that is good. welcome aboard peterkin. you a college student? even better

anonymous said...

travis peterkin has been winning jr. national titles since he was a little kid, 11 or 12yrs old. he also won the mayors cup in 04. seen him win in the jr national gg in 2006 at 15yrs old. seen him in the 09 regionals. he can fight. he is his 2nd year in the mens group. smart kid staying in the amateurs. needs more experience. he knows that. even fights he lost was close or maybe controversial. kid will be fine. his chance will come.

anonymous said...

i wanna see eric govan fight this weekend. his boxing skills have improved a lot over the past. he can beat any of the 165 open fighters that is left out there.

anonymous said...

govan lost to peterkin in the 09 regionals.

anonymous said...

if only guerrero keeps his mouthpiece in his mouth....that is something he has to fix.

anonymous said...

i am anxious to see this weeks bout sheets. lets get ready to rumble!!

anonymous said...

is gary allen russell fighting in the dc gg? would be nice 2 see him compete.

anonymous said...

day day v fox. make sure i have a good seat 4 this one. where is marquis moore?

anonymous said...

its not saturday yet? cant wait. the dc gg has heated up. only the strong survives. good luck boxers. good job officials. keep up the good work.

anonymous said...

peterkin been down here since 07. he won the jo regionals in richmond in 07. he went down to 152 and didnt make weight 4 the future stars. took time off 2 finish high school.

anonymous said...

is thomas williams going pro this year? just a rumor i heard.

Anonymous said...

Yeah where is marquis moore?

Anonymous said...

marcuos moore is in the federal witness program.

anonymous said...

wow. witness program? marquis moore? this is more serious than spitting out mouthpieces and slapping, thats 4 sure

Anonymous said...

(laughing) Thomas Williams didn't get droppedvby a body shot. It was a knee to the groin. A very close source to Thomas Williams said that he has had numerous offers to turn professional but won't until after he competes in the golden gloves and USA nationals!!!!!!!!

anonymous said...

my bad on thomas williams. i didnt know what it was but the ref gave a 8 count. thomas is on the top of his game. every good/great fighter needs a tough bout sometimes. good bout thomas.

anonymous said...

great night of boxing. every bout was great. thanks for the great work Gary. you take care of all us hardcore boxing fans.

anonymous said...

great night of action.

Anonymous said...

people shouldn't make crazy comments mr. moore has to sit this tournament out. He will be back.

anonymous said...

god bless marquis moore. im sure we all are happy to hear he is fine. boxing has been a voice for alot of our young men. great night of boxing saturday night.

Gary Digital Williams said...

The only one I can confirm is that Gary Allen Russell will not compete because he had surgery on his shoulder. Russell is slated to return in time for the USA National tournament in June.

anonymous said...

i hope gary returns soon. this kid is a great fighter and will be a favorite in the nationals. good luck Gary Allen Russell.

Anonymous said...

Dusty turns 15yrs old not 14.

anonymous said...

guys who advanced to the finals on this card is sitting back waiting to see who will be joining them on the road to the finals. things are really heating up.

Anonymous said...

The peterkin squad is on fire, the kid has a great future ahead of him.Way to go Brooklyn kid.

anonymous said...

peterkin roots is in brooklyn but he is a maryland person now. but like biggie smalls said "brooklyn we did it", peterkin is just trying to do it. good luck kid, you been through a lot in this game. good and bad. we wish you well. you deserve it.
