Special Night at DC Boxing Hall of Fame Ceremonies!

The Washington DC Boxing Hall of Fame inducted eight new members during its 28th annual awards banquet at Martin's Crosswinds in Greenbelt, MD.

Inducted in the Professional Boxing category were:

Leonard Langley -- As a boxer, he held future world champion Dwight Muhammad Qawi to a draw in Qawi's pro debut. As a trainer, Langley has trained the cream of the crop along the Beltway, including William Joppy, Keith Holmes, Derrell Coley and Reggie Green.

Derrick Holmes -- as an amateur, Holmes defeated future world champion Wilfredo Gomez. Holmes was 17-3-1, 11 KO's during a four-year career (1978-1982) that was cut short by legal troubles. Holmes is now a trainer in the Beltway area.

Dale Staley -- Staley won nine of his first 10 bouts by KO en rout to a 13-7, 11 KO record from 1977-1982. Staley was also a sparring partner for Sugar Ray Leonard in the days leading to Leonard's second bout with Roberto Duran.

Amateur Boxing category -- Jo Jo King and Jimmy Binns who were long time amateur champions.

In the Outstanding Contributors section-- ring announcer Henry "Discombobulating" Jones, Dick Trindle (who is heavily involved in amateur boxing in the area) and former DC Boxing Commission chair Joseph Osterman, who was the oldest attendee at tonight's function -- at 100 years young!

Current amateur boxing champion Dusty Harrison received the James Balukevich Outstanding Amateur Boxing Award for 2008.

Leonard Langley was the first trainer that I got to know in the D.C. area in the early 1990's. He worked with a heavyweight that I managed at the time at the number 11 gym in SE D.C. He was training Coley, Green, T-Rex, Gary Powell at the time as well. He was and is one of the finest trainers and most importantly one of the finest people that I have had the pleasure of knowing in my career in the sport. He deserves every accolade and award. My hat is off to him. Congratulations Leonard.

Both of you bring so much to our area and this sport we all love and breathe, it means a lot when we catch you ringside or read your cutting edge takes.

Really hope you both can make it next year!!!

Not sure if you were talking about John or Chris or Jerome and myself, but either way thanks for the positive comments.

If it was me (and I'm pretty sure it wasn't), I'll tell you something, I wish I could write more about boxing. Hopefully, we'll find some room in the Post in '09. Happy Thanksgiving to all the boxers and the entire BATB "family," and that includes every trash-talking anonymous poster out there and Chris Middendorf! -- John S.

Interesting GabCast as always, Gary. I especially appreciate whatever you and/or Gabgast did to make activating the audio just a one-click process.
