Jargal Wins Second 'Fight Night' Title; Snyder and Mackey Fight to a Draw; Mayes-Lockett a No-Contest!

Talent and controversy were on display at the 19th annual Fight Night at the Washington Hilton and Towers Hotel in Washington, DC.

The main event saw junior welterweight prospect "The Mongolian Mongoose" Bayan Jargal of Arlington, VA win his second straight "Fight For Children" title and remain undefeated with a tough eight-round TKO over a game Doel Carrasquillo of Lancaster, PA. Jargal used a fierce body attack throughout the bout to gain the advantage in the contest, but Carrasquillo stayed right inside and at times gave as good as he got. Carrasquillo tested Jargal's chin as well as anybody in the young Mongolian's career, but Jargal's chin was equal to the task.

The end came early in the eighth-round when Jargal landed a brutal right hook and followed that up with a series of combinations that dropped Carrasquillo to the canvas. Referee Joe Cooper stopped the bout without a count at 28 seconds of the eighth and final round.

Jargal is now 9-0-1, six KO's while Carrasquillo falls to 12-9-1, 10 KO's.

In the co-feature bout,"The OC Bomber" Joshua Snyder and John "No Mercy" Mackey battled to a six-round split decision draw. This was a rematch of their June 13 nationally televised battle in Scranton, PA.

The familiarity between the two boxers led to solid exchanges throught the contest. As in the first encounter, Snyder, now fighting out of Ocean City, MD, seemed to take an advantage in the fourth round as he landed solid lefts and rights that sent the Montgomery, AL-based Mackey on his bicycle defensively. However, this bout had the boxers fight two more rounds and Mackey used those rounds effectively to close the show well as his right hand started to land more.

The judge's scorecards showed 59-55 for Snyder, 58-56 for Mackey and 57-57.

Mackey is now 11-1-1, five KO's while Snyder is 7-3-1, three KO's. The Snyder-Mackey bout was refereed by Michelle Hall, the first woman to referee a pro bout in the District of Columbia.

The controversy of the night came in the first bout of the evening between Beltway super middleweights Henry "Hurricane" Mayes of Baltimore, MD and Willis "The Prophet" Lockett of Takoma Park, MD.

In the first round of the scheduled six-round contest, Mayes hammered Lockett with a vicious right hand. Lockett stumbled around the ring, but he didn't fall. Referee Billy Johnson intervened and gave Lockett a standing eight-count.

That proved to be a mistake because, under the rules of the DC Boxing and Wrestling Commission, there is no standing eight-count. The stoppage also resulted in Lockett getting some rest.

This allowed Lockett to come back strong and tee off on Mayes in the second round with lefts and rights. Johnson stopped the bout for good at 1:34 of the round, giving Lockett an apparent victory.

But by the end of the evening, commission officials ruled the bout a no-contest. Lockett's record remains at 10-6-5, four KO's while Mayes's record stays at 7-6-2, four KO's.

The heavyweight bout between Laurel, MD's "The Big Ticket" Dwayne McRae and the debuting Kareem Wilson of DC was cancelled because of time constrictions.

It was another incredible evening as a number of legendary boxers were showcased to the movers and shakers on hand. Former heavyweight champion "Smokin' Joe Frazier was the second inductee into the Fight Night Hall of Fame. The first Fight Night Hall of Fame inductee -- "The Raging Bull" Jake La Motta -- returned to the event. Also in attendance were former heavyweight champions James "Buster" Douglas, Ken Norton, Michael Spinks and Ernie Terrell as well as heavyweight contenders Earnie Shavers and Gerry Cooney ,lightweight champion Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini and junior welterweight champ Aaron "Hawk" Pryor.

Other sporting legends honored included baseball hall of famer third baseman and Baltimore Oriole great Brooks Robinson, legendary Cleveland Indians pitching great Bob Feller (who turned 90 this week) and hall of famer and Chicago Bears middle linebacker Dick Butkus.

There were live performances by the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders and the legendary musical group Blood, Sweat and Tears, who are celebrating their 40th anniversary. Michael Buffer, in an annual appearance, served as ring announcer.

No official word on how much money was raised this year, but event officials say it was more than the three million dollars raised last year. This year, Fight Night received a check for $500,000 from the government of the United Arab Emirates. Also, event officials auctioned off an American flag that flew over Camp Fallujah in Iraq. The winning bid was $75,000. Should the Redskins make the playoffs, the flag will be flown at FedEx Field. The flag will also fly on Opening Day 2009 at Nationals Park.

Speaking of the Washington Nationals, event officials auctioned off an autographed Nationals chopper motorcycle. The winning bid was $85,000.

Here's the BATB Post-Fight Wrap-Up Show . Henry "Discombobulating" Jones and I are joined by two-time WBO Welterweight champion Paul "The Punisher" Williams as well as Dwayne McRae.

Gabcast! Boxing Along the Beltway #136 - Results and Controversy from Fight Night!

New DC Boxing Hall of Famer Henry "Discombobulating" Jones and I recap the card with assistance from two-time WBO Welterweight champion Paul "The Punisher" Williams. Beltway Rookie heavyweight "The Big Ticket" Dwayne McRae also joins us to express his disappointment on being unable to perform on this card.

The DC Commission is now two for two. The new commissioner and Alfred Grant have now blown decisions in the first two fights that they have combined on. One wonders whether there is a more hapless pair in the sport. This is absolutely unacceptable, inexcusable and they should have their licenses revoked. They should be called before the Association of Boxing Commissioners and removed from their posts. The fighters train hard to earn their money and to try and get somewhere in their careers. And now on the first two fight cards in the District in a long time this new team has failed the fighters, the paying customers and boxing community as a whole. Do we really think that any legitimate promoter is going to want to bring is fighters here and put them at risk when they are aware of the total incompetence of the DC Boxing Commission. This is so embarassing for the sport of boxing in DC that it is incredible. These two guys do not have a clue as to what they are doing. Can we start a move to recall these two and get them removed before they do anymore damage. They screw up the fights, they embarass the boxing community here, they have no idea how even to run a weigh in. What can we do to get rid of them?

Josh Snyder is true warrior! He came in very good shape and was ready. But last night, Mackey was better and Mackey won the fight. Josh told me we had won, his coach told me we had won and that knock down was real knock down not a slip. That was very bad experience. Taking nothing away from Josh's gallant performance but last night Mackey won and it should be 1-1 between them two.
John Mackey will still be fighting for NABA title on Dec.13th at Atlanta, Georgia

As far as Willis Lockett? I think commission made the right call considering DC doesnt have standing 8 count rule. Willis was scheduled to fight Joey Spine for NABO title on NOV.29 but I really dont know whats gonna happen now.

I meant to say Willis was schedule to fight Joey Spina.

the D.C. commission needs to get down to serious work because one day it's not just going to be screwing up, it's going to be someone getting badly hurt. The commission performance at this show was nothing short of appalling, from rounds consistently less than three minutes, to poor in the ring decision making. You can't have this. The fighters give to the edge of their lives in this sport, and the commission must do everything in its power to run the show properly. We're getting way too much of this crap in D.C. lately. It shows that political appointments that are nothing more than gifts have no place in quality government. A boxing commissioner should be an unimpeachable member of the boxing community, or, at least, a first-class administrator with at least a rudimentary knowledge of the game. . .
As for the fights, Lockett got lucky and Mackey got beat.
All in all, a great night marred by the commission, which I hope reads this blog and understands that the boxing community is paying attention and expects much much better. Peace.

ok... so much for the dc commission... how about bayan jargal? wow, this young guy is a destroyer. i have heard about him and watched the fight very closely. he is patient, smart, and a devastating body puncher. aside from a couple hard shots and some inside punch trading he completely dominated this fight. smart money is on this kid to bring a title someday soon to the beltway

I dub it the Blue and Red corner alert. Save our boxers and our DC Boxing Reputation. You may be appointed, but You are accountable and you will answer to us, the boxing community.

Don't make Mayor Fenty have to address this issue on his morning newscasts.

BATB Community ACCEPTS NOTHING LESS THAN THE BEST TREATMENT OF OUR BOXING INTEGRITY.

IF THE CURRENT ADMIN CAN'T OR WON'T STAND AND DELIVER WHAT THEY SHOULD YOU WILL GO DOWN.

PROMISE.

I agree with all of you guys, DC commission is terriable. I have been to couple dozens of states and half dozen countries around the world but Dc is definitely is the worst.

Anonymous said...

So...

What are WE going to do about this?

Gary Digital Williams said...

If you really feel that strongly about what the DC Commission is or is not doing, my suggestion is that you attend a commission meeting.

The DC Boxing and Wrestling Commission meets the second Tuesday of every month in the headquarters of the District of Columbia office of Regulatory Affairs located at 941 North Capitol Street, NE (across the street from Gonzaga High School) The meetings are open to the public and begin at 6:30 PM

I think if fans came and RESPECTFULLY voiced their displeasure, I do believe the commission will take your views into account.

Having said that, what happened last Thursday night was not really a commission error, it was a referee's error. Billy Johnson, who is normally a solid referee, blew the call. Simple as that.

In fact, the commission should be commended for changing the decision in the Mayes-Lockett bout before the night was finished.

With all due respect, Gary, the buck stops with the Commission. They are responsible for the actions of the referees and the judges, just as they are for the inspectors and other officials. If a referee had started to call a standing 8 in another jurisdiction where they were not in use, the commisisoner would stand up at ring side and tell him to stop. Here, they had no clue. NO CLUEOF WHAT THEIR OWN RULES WERE. How sad is that. We are not speaking of an extensive, complicated rule book. This is not cricket for goodness sake. With the August fight, they should have reviewed the videotape of the fight, and two weeks after the fight overturned the decision. This situation is totally embarassing NATONWIDE, and is only going to lead to something worse happening. This is not a sport where we want the officials, including Grant to be LEARNING ON THE JOB. As mentioned earlier, someone could easily be hurt. I am hoping that Mayor Fenty does get wind of all this (and anyone who has been reading these posts who knows him should certainly pass them on to him) and instantly cleans house. Because if they screw up and someone gets hurt, DC will be sued and lose as they have already developed a track record of incompetency.

Respectfully,

Gary, R U Nuts? U No it doesn't matter who sits in a DC boxing commission meeting.

Wake up. Or wake up YOUR fan base of BATB supporters.

Anyone can go to any DC meeting...their presence or not has nothing to do with the ineptitude or success of the recent (OR ANY) commission.

You guys going to string poor Billy Johnson on the line? Well hell, Billy Johnson must have grabbed all your balls and just went in there and did his thingl LETS FUCKIN' HANG HIS ASS! HOW DARE HE SULLY YOUR REP! That means

BJ is the king! He certainly carries the crucifix of this tragedy. SHAME on all of you.

Gary

Please let all the movers and shakers who want to make a difference know that the meeting will be this Wednesday, because of the holiday. Wouldn't want any monumental (needed) changes to get waylaid.

God knows...Who wants or needs to bare that for the commission?

GRANT?...

He has been with the commission for how long?

He's getting paid? By who?

Damn Gary,

Sounds like you are 100% beef for the DC Boxing Commission..

I am new on this scene, but I thought you were an upfront square boxing sensei.

Gary Digital Williams said...

I'm actually trying to be fair in this situation. No one has been more critical of the DC Commission than I have.

Prior to Chairman McKnight's passing, I was taken aside by McKnight and members of the commission and we discussed some of the things that I said about the commission, especially my comment about the DC Commission having very few "boxing people" working for them.

I continue to stand by that comment and do contend that the Commission has a lot of work to do in their overall knowledge of the workings of the sport.

This statement primarily concerns the higher-up members of this commission. There are people that work as inspectors and regulators on this commission who have been around this sport a long time and I respect their knowledge of boxing.

However, those people do not have any power to make final decisions concerning regulations and that is where the disconnect, in my opinion lies.

I still contend that what happened on Thursday was not a commission mistake but a referee mistake. But where the commission did foul up was that no one from the commission seemed to talk to the referee about the decision that was made.

That is definitely an issue. Most commissions that I have been around, pull the referee over immediately and talk about the situation.

Linda "Great Shot" Siadys said...

I know, but we drift not very far...

At any level, Your 6th paragraph echos the fear and frustration of the boxing community.

I am new on this turf, but so is Mr. Turner.

All eyes and hearts and dreams are on him, including mine.

My DC expectations are high and my timeline is short.

DC commish made the right call on both occasions. Congrats to hi for making the ref's stay with their call....like it not that's the rules

Anonymous said...

jargal ok,but you but him in the ring with someone like todd wilson, and todd will make a girl out of him, your need to stop talking about jargal because todd is far more better than jargal can ever wish.i give jargal 3 rds if he luckly with todd.

Anonymous said...

Todd Wilson is a punk.Put him in there with Andrew Farmer and he will get knocked out in 1 round.Make the fight you red headed step child.

Anonymous said...

I tell you what I was at the fights and the comment made earlier was on time this Jargal is the whole package ,one way to gauge Todd Wilson is to put him in his next bout with Doel Carrisquillo and see how he does,I would be totally surprised if he did what Jargal did Dominate, it ain't happening make that fight and see what happens.

Anonymous said...

The comment about Farmer and Wilson did not come from the Farmer Camp. Clatterbuck quit playing around.

Anonymous said...

My God, did anyone see Carrisquillo's face after the fight with Jargal? Jargal methodically took him apart round by round. I have seen Todd Wilson and I have seen Bayan Jargal. With all due respect to Todd Wilson, sorry pal you lost your chance. Jargal is on an entirely different trajectory. I agree that the earlier comment is right on time. Todd you might become a hometown favorite but Jargal is world title bound. Any student of the game can see it. Best wishes to all fighters and trainers but Willie T keep doin' what you doin'.

Anonymous said...

Todd is a punk, and that dude Doel can fight, Jargal took care of him, BUT i would take Doel over Todd hands down.

If you think I'm wrong make the fight and you'll see

Anonymous said...

yes your wrong todd box to good for doel, did you see todd last fight.doel farmer and jargal wont match that.and i dont think any one of them would fight him.i was told its hard to find fights for todd because no one will fight him.

Anonymous said...

someone come up with a contract and i am sure neither farmer nor jargal would refuse!! try it and let's find out..... todd boxing too good for either of these two? i would like to see that.white lightning v.s the mongoliam mongoose??? white lightning v.s the DooMan???

Anonymous said...

sounds like a box off to me.todd who do you want first. there a lot of boxing shows that would put those fights on. just give us a name farmer or jargal.

Anonymous said...

Why do all these Todd Wilson fans want to see him get beat, stop calling out Farmer and Jargal ,Wilson is not there yet , do the math and your homework if you know ANYTHING about Boxing. Wilson has fought five BUMS with a record combined of 9-18-3, these opponents have a record of 14-31-1,who has he fought with a winning record NOBODY please make comments that make sense Farmer,Jargal,Curtis Smith, Carlos Cisneros would beat the crap out of this beginner, dont put him in deep water because he would drown....

Anonymous said...

amen to that!

Anonymous said...

I'll bet Jargal would ko Farmer and Todd Wilson on same night.

Anonymous said...

someone is trying to start something.

Anonymous said...

Ya Think?

Anonymous said...

keep talking........ i would take that bet..... maybe jargal would be the one getting knocked out!

Anonymous said...

Tim Coleman would beat all of them on the same night.

Anonymous said...

Tim Coleman and Jargal be good match up. But those two other guys, Farmer and Wilson is not in their league. Farmer and Wilson is still in 4-6 round beginner.

Anonymous said...

agree with that! jargal coleman would be exciting. Are they the same weight class?

Anonymous said...

wilson would be a better match for coleman,if iwas going to pick the order of those fighter it would be wilson coleman farmer than jargal.

Anonymous said...

I think if Coleman was on top of his game he would pick Wilson apart like a juicy chicken bone. Wilson is an unpredictable warrior with that big Irish heart, but Coleman has some serious solid boxing skills when he brings them.

Anonymous said...

wilson can not box with any of those 3 fighter, farmer would get a dec, while coleman would stop him in the late rds. jargal in the early rds.i dont know why we even talking about this, wilson would never never never never fight any of those 3 guys,it will be a while bsfore he fight someone with a winning record.while he is a good draw they better keep it that way.

Anonymous said...

well then it sounds like a good start to a show.. why doen't someone promote one and be ready to have lots of money to pay each of them to fight each other.

Anonymous said...

farmer just went 8 rounds in his last fight. how does that make him a beginner? he has 12 pro bouts and a lot of am. fights... how is he a beginner??
