In a bout that featured a final-round that will go down as one of the most incredible in recent Beltway Boxing history, Baltimore junior middleweight Jessie "The Beast" Nicklow captured an eight-round unanimous decision over George "War Time" Rivera at Du Burns Arena in Baltimore.
Prior to the final round, this was a dominating performance by Nicklow. The undefeated 21-year-old was in complete control of the contest, using very effective inside work to break Rivera down. Nicklow scored a knockdown in the fourth with a beautiful uppercut to the body. Nicklow's continued good work inside forced Rivera to grab and hold, which led to referee Kenny Chevalier taking a point away from Rivera in the sixth round.
As the eighth round began, Chevalier sent both men back to their corners to get a fair start. The bell rang but Rivera was still heading to his corner and had his back partially turned to Nicklow. Nicklow ran across and clocked Rivera, knocking him down. Chevalier did not rule an official knockdown, but the hit seemed to wake up Rivera and set off a small melee that caused arena security to rush in.
Once security cleared the ring, the bout resumed, but it was Rivera that did the charging, catching Nicklow with solid shots that dropped him to the canvas, not once but twice. After the second knockdown, Chevalier halted the action, and after a long period of time, found that Rivera's mouthpiece had been missing. The bout was stopped again later in the round because of a cut in the middle of Rivera's forehead. After the round resumed, Nicklow hung on for the victory.
Judges John Gradowski and Malik Waleed scored the bout 75-73 while Judge Joe Ware saw the bout 77-72. The BATB score saw Nicklow winning, 76-73.
With the victory, Nicklow is now 19-0-1, seven KO's. Rivera loses his second straight and falls to 8-2, three KO's.
The co-feature saw Baltimore welterweight James Stephenson make his pro debut a successful one with a third-round KO over Cambridge, MD's Dontre King. Stephenson kept King on his bicycle all throughout the bout before landing two body shots that dropped King to one knee after each shot. King could not beat referee Waleed's 10-count and the bout was stopped at 1:45 of the third. King's record falls to 1-2.
Debuting Beltway heavyweights "The Big Ticket" Dwayne McRae of Laurel, MD and Hannibal Otey of Baltimore met in a solid clash where both men took and gave good shots. In the end, it was McRae who was able to overpower Otey and stop him at 2:42 of the fourth round.
In a rematch of a June bout at Du Burns, cruiserweight Robert "Mac Attack" McConnell of Ellicott City, MD lost a four-round unanimous decision to Octavius Davis of Wilson, NC. Davis dropped McConnell twice en route to the revenge victory. McConnell is now 1-2 while Davis is 2-1-1, one KO.
The opening bout saw Lusby, MD rookie middleweight Keith Gross win a four-round unanimous decision over Calvin "Shotgun" Aughtry of DC. Gross is 2-0, one KO while Aughtry is 0-2.
Due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to put together a Post-Fight Wrap-Up show. So, here are my thoughts.
While the clocking of George Rivera by Jessie Nicklow while Rivera's back was turned was not the most sportsmanlike thing to do, Nicklow was within his rights to do it. The bell did ring. Referee Kenny Chevalier called the boxers to box. Why Rivera was still headed to his corner at that point was beyond me.
As far as the delay after the second time Nicklow was dropped..I have no answer for that. I don't know what happened. It was a very inordinate amount of time between the knockdown and the restart of the bout. That is something that needs to be reviewed post haste.
Both men deserve a lot of credit. Nicklow, for putting on one of his most dominating performances for six rounds. Rivera, for surviving the onslaught and almost pulling out a victory. A rematch is probably in order, although it should ONLY happen in front of a national television audience with something even bigger on the line.
Solid pro debuts tonight from James Stephenson, Dwayne McRae and, in defeat, Hannibal Otey. There is some solid promise from all of them and they will be heard from in the future.
Robert McConnell had a boatload of chances to put away Octavius Davis and just couldn't get it done. Davis was extremely awkward but unlike the first bout in June, Davis was able to use that awkwardness to his advantage.
Keith Gross looked very nice against a very game Calvin Aughtry.

He headbudded (that's is where the cut came on his forehead), hit below the belt twice and is going to hit a man with his back turned how many points did they take from Jessie for doing those things. I agree regardless how the fight was going WARTIME was victorious at the end. He honestly knocked out Jessie and that is what counts! The referee was not being fair in his judgement in the ring. How many points was taken away from Jessie for fighting dirty put that in your aticle. He head budded WARTIME that is where the cut on his forehead came front. It is all on tape. I agree they need a rematch in George home town next time. We will be fair!

The refuree allowed him additional time other than allowed to get his head on stright and compose himself before restarting the fight! That is no lie nor can it be denied! WarTime won the fight at that point it was a KO credited to Rivera! I agree the article is going to mention points taken away from WarTime...with all the dirty fighting Jessie did no points were taken away from him. Again. Batimore refugees and judges have the reputation of being unfair they were there for Nicklow. WarTime, bring the next fight home and you will be on much more professional grounds! If you allow something like this to go on with your fighter than he needs a new team that will step up, fight for what's right, advocate and train him!!

Both fighters fought, Yes. Rivera landed the KO and won the fight at the end. It was an unfair time allowed in Jessie's favor to allow him to get back up before the fight was restarted.

Let up on Jessie. He feels terrible, I spoke to him aprox. 2am this morning. He was actually in tears, he fully admits that he was knocked out, but says truthfully that it is not his fault the ref did such things. He is very upset and wants everyone to know that he is an honest fighter. Says he will fight George again, but not right now. Now you tell me how many boxers are honest like Jessie and fully admit that they were knocked out and the decision should have went the other way??? Give Jessie credit, for he desrves it.
This was the fight of the year so far......truly a classic battle with one of the best come backs the beltway has ever seen.No question that Jessie was in command of this fight until the final round.War Times comeback was of epic proportions and showed great heart and character.No doubt that there should be a rematch. I am sure Jake and Joe will figure that out.

The reason WARTIME was walking to his corner was because the referee told him to go to his corner!! That is when Jessie came behind him and hit him on the back his head! Is that a fair and honest fighter? The referee and Jessie were in COHOOTS through the entire fight!

To begining with why did security only attack and tackle WARTIME and left Kenny and Nicklow standing ?! Nichlow was the one who threw the punch! I was there and this is the way it went down.
THE CARD: Rivera won 1 and 2, Rivera was wining the first part of the 3rd and went down and Nickolow won the 3, 4, 5 and 6. In the 6th round Rivera came back towards the end. Rivera won 7 and KO Nicklow in the 8th!!

I was unable to attend my son's match last night. I am very upset with the way he was treated along with the obstacles he had to battle. My son was denied his victory. The referee should have been disqualified for altering the fight to help assist Nicklow in winning. The video clearly shows it all.

I feel that my son won his respect from the fans last night. The entire arena witnessed the injustice and unfair practice of Baltimore's boxing arena's referee.

I kept reading Gary Digital's observation of the fight between George "War Time" Rivera and Jesse Nickolow's bout. I guess the fact that Gary Digital is a Baltimore man he was more diplomatic than honest of the occurrences last night. Being diplomatic is a way of sitting on the fence and not having a strong enough personality to call it what it is. There was clearly unfairness throughout the entire fight. To allow such dishonest and unfair tactics to continue to transpire as an ongoing conduct is appalling. The only thing I agree with Gary Digital is when he said "There should be a televised rematch with more on the line." According to Vince, "Jesse wouldn't mind a rematch but not right now." The only thing I want to say is "Let's make it happen!"

There is an old adage in boxing that when you take a fighter on the road you have to knockout the hometown guy to win a split decision. Well, we took Charlottesville, VA's "WAR TIME" George Rivera up to Baltimore to take on Baltimore's Jesse "The Beast" Nicklow and George knocked him out not once but twice, and we LOST! I had a meeting with the Maryland Boxing Commissioner, Mr. Patrick Pannella, after the fight. I must tell you that Mr. Pannella is a professional in every sense of the word and the state of Maryland is lucky to have someone of Mr. Pannella's competence and intelligence in his position. With that said, our camp has some severe grievances with the fight between Rivera and Nicklow and our discussions with Mr. Pannella will continue on Monday morning on behalf of our fighter, "WAR TIME" George Rivera. To Promoter Jake Smith: Thank you for having WAR TIME on your show. Jake, you are a first class promoter and a great guy and you put on a tremendous show. Jesse Nicklow is one hell of a fighter. He's tough, strong, and durable. Poltics aside, there is only one way to settle this controversy and that is within the confines of a boxing ring. I'm of the opinion that we need to get this done sooner rather than later. Let's get it done and let's get it on!

The bottom line is that I don't consider myself diplomatic. I consider myself honest.
Do I think the length of time given to Nicklow was wrong? Yes I do. Do I think it was an unsportsmanlike thing for Nicklow to do? Yes, I do.
Do I also think the shot was taken within the rules? Yes, I do. Some seem to forget that any referee will say "protect yourself at all times." That's a fundamental rule.
Those of you that believe that Rivera will get a fair shake are some of the same people who believe that the Virginia Commission is bogus. I've heard and seen you say it.
I definitely want to see a rematch. It would only be fair if it were in Virginia. Hopefully, something similar does not happen.
i spoke with jessie earlier and unfortunatley he cannot remember anything about the fight. he has suffered severe head damage. lets all pray that jessie gets his memory back and has a susscesful rematch. jessie is very honest and since-he fully admits that he was out for over 60 seconds. lets all support jessie and purchase tickets from jessie for the rematch

Just to set the record straight Linda, two big errors in your posts:
#1. Fact: Boxers have to protect themselves at all times.
What Jessie did was unsportmanlike, but not illegal. The ref is the one who screwed up that incident.
#2. Better Promotions isn't handling Jessie, Baltimore Boxing (Jake Smith) is. They are still putting together their first show in MD. They're not even licensed to promote in VA. James merely offered to have the rematch on his show, a neutral promoter offering (in his own best interest of course) to have a VERY attractive fight that will sell tickets on his own card... nothing wrong there.
Emotions are running high after this fight & understandably so... but I think there's some misplaced anger here.

Fact #1. I think I agreed. Jessie was in his rights to punch. I disagree with George not being in his rights to box too. There is a rule, but apparently that didn't apply to any counts that involved Jessie. So if slipshod reffin' is going to be given. It should be given equally.

I think a more gracious offer would be to ask George's promoter how you could participate in their state. Neither are in dire straits and they made the trip here.

Hensley and the Staunton camp need to fight this and get the referee suspended. This fight should not go on War Time's score card as a lost and count against him. I agree if the rematch is not in VA no rematch. Schedule it on a Saturday to allow travel.

OK I admit it that Jessie was KO'd twice but you guys are getting on the wrong person. It is not Jessie's fault that the results were wrong. In the end, a boxer is best served when he signs on with a skilled promoter and sends in a loyal, dedicated manager to do the financial negotiating and making sure all legal requirements are met. Boxers who achieve not only success in the ring but also long-term financial success know to surround themselves with people who know the business of boxing as well as those who know the art. An unscrupulous promoter (Jake the Snake) will take advantage of a young, hungry boxer who just wants to get in the ring and show what he can do. It's up to the manager to make sure the boxer gets a fair chunk of the pie and is treated fairly. Where was the integrity in this fight? This decision needs to be contested. The treatment and abuse Wartime experienced on September 5, 2008, was not only illegal it was criminal.
For all those that believe they know the rules in the ring here is a lesson. A boxer should protect themselves at all time but when a referee sends the boxers to the corner they are not to come out of the corner until the referee give the command to box. Now when the referee send the boxers to the corner he should stand between the boxers to prevent one boxer from running across the ring to hit the other. Also one of the instructions given in the locker room is that you are not to hit a boxer in the back of the head.

But I must tell you, I take a severe issue with you calling Jake "The Snake" Smith an unscrupulous promoter. I have known Jake now for just over 4years. I just finished warching the video of the fight. The fans that took the video are right behind Jake and his camp. When WARTIME knocked out Nicklow the referee Kenny got in between to stop WARTIME from continuing his fight to help out Nicklow. Also, on the video Jake whistled to the referee to get his attention. As the referee looked over, Jake put up his finger to show and say "Give it one minute!" After that was stated, the referee stalled the match so that Nicklow could regain his composure from WARTIMES knockout punches. This will not be swept under the rug. La Familia, you have every right to be upset.
As for Joe Hensey, you should reconsider your statement in defense of Jake the snake! You defended him by saying Jake treated everyone in your camp with respect. The video shows the biggest act of disrespect and unprofessional behavior that anyone could have done in boxing. Not only was this disrespect and unprofessional, this boxing match was clearly plotted from the beginning so that no matter what, the outcome would be that Nicklow would come out as the victor. CLEARLY WARTIME WAS THE OBVIOUS VICTOR IN THIS MATCH! With not one, but TWO knockouts by wartime. Yet, Nicklow still won! Is this not an injustice done to WARTIME? One of YOUR fighters Joe Hensey! I spoke to Jessie and he has hired a lawyer. He feels that they are going to reverse the decision and says he will give a rematch if people just drop it. He also says that it is not his fault that all of this has happen. He is very upset by all of this; he also wants everyone to know that he has no memory of the later rounds of the match, therefore, he will not comment any further. He admits that his girlfriend told him the truth and says that he was knocked out, but only once, not twice like everyone says. Also wants everyone to know that he has black friends and a pureto rican friend. He is not a racist. He says that he would never date outside his race, but thats only because of the way it is. i must admit that friday night fight was one of the most entertaining fights iv ever seen in person. it was a war! and speaking of in my opion, WARTIME didnt deserve it like some of you say. From my point of view these 2 men fought their heart out and what both were looking for was a KO. It was once quoted, "protect yourself at all times." you hit the nail right on the head. I met with Jessie and his advisor today. Jessie would like to give George a rematch at the very same spot. I'm a boxing fan love the sport if a person doesn't receive there JUST win then people will turn to the left on boxing. If the Baltimore judges and the Commish feel like it's was a Nicklow win then let's post the tape of the fight on-line so the world can judge. This is ROME a boxing fan!
If the commish for Baltimore will not step in to resolve the false outcome of the fight. A re-match should take place but NOT in Baltimore. Nicklow if your fan base is as strong as you indicated above then they will follow. Rome make it happen.

The person who should fear a law suit is Jake & anyone else believed to be involved in a conspiracy. This could be the end of their promotional company, all boxers who operate under this banner should start seeking other alternatives ASAP. The financial ramifications of any civil law suits resulting from this will surely put Jake in the "hot seat" which could cause for him to sink to levels that will be detrimental to even those in his own stable.

Caught on tape, the low blow, Jake gestures to the refuree, the sucker punch behind the head, the refuree altering and interfering and his illegal practice, no points taken from Nicklow. Everyone and anyone at the arena that night witnessed the INJUSTICE even Jessie's fans. It caused many of Maryland's fans to swag towards WARTIME.

I think Nicklow/Rivera would be on equal footing outside of both states. But that being said... Jessie SHOULD fight the next in VA. You know, I am thinking/hoping it goes beyond that and end ...to a classic rematch....(Gatti/Ward).
