DC lightweight Anthony Peterson maintained his undefeated record with a workmanlike 12-round unanimous decision over Fernando Trejo of Mexico City, Mexico.
Peterson's fundamentals helped give him the victory as he used his jab to set up crushing uppercuts throughout. Two judges said Peterson pitched a shutout, 120-108, the other judge scored the bout 119-109.
With the win, Peterson captured the interim NABF Lightweight title and raised his record to 27-0, 19 KO's. The loss drops Trejo's record to 30-14-4, 18 KO's.
UPDATE: It has been reported that Peterson hurt his left hand in the fifth round of the contest. His hand was x-rayed after the bout but no word on the results of the x-rays.

Wally Matthews was pretty critical of Peterson throughout the telecast. I would be interested in hearing this community's critique of the performance and opinions on whether what Wally said was accurate. No one said Peterson wasn't winning handily and easily, and no one questioned his fundamentals, save for some brief comments about looping the right hand rather than throwing straight shots, but his instinct to finish an overmatched opponent was opened to question. As well, Matthews pointed out that Peterson threw hundreds of jabs, but seemed more interested in "touching" his opponent rather than clobbering him. I'm not passing judgment either way here; I'd just like to see some dialogue beyond the well-deserved congratulations. -- J.S.

Nevertheless, a solid, albeit mythological performance by the very talented A. Peterson.

A very underwhelming performance. The story has been that he has power.... he does not. The story has been that he is strong... he is not. The story has been that he is fast...he is not. In with Trejo who can't bust a grape, who had been knocked out by Bobby Pacquiao in the third round of his last fight, a guy who really is a natural 130lber, this was a test to see exactly where AP was. Was he good enough to do what Bobby P. had done (Bobby is 27-13 or something) and knock Trejo out? Unfortunately not. This is a business where people want to see agression and kos, and not listen to the Monica Seles "pop, pop, pop" whenever he throws a jab. He will be in way over his head with any of the top 135lb fighters.
This is not being a hater, it is just stating the obvious and what everyone is already saying.
Lamont on the other hand should come off better. No one has said that he had power, and we know he has the best skills. Lets look for him to box the ears off of his guy in a couple of weeks. It should happen.
I thought it was a good boxing performance, but perhaps we all would have liked to see him punish Trejo, which he certainly didn't do.

The KO doesn't come in every fight. Still, solid workman's performace. Fighters can look devestating one fight & underwhelming in the next. Bottom line is that, IMO, broad statements like "is not strong & does not have power" can't be made based on one fight.

To be perfectly honest I was expecting an outstanding performance but Ant didn't deliver. Don't get me wrong, he conventiently won but as a boxing fan I looked for more fireworks. At 27-0 it's time for more fireworks from Ant. This is what separates the great boxers from meer contenders. Although the performance last night goes into the W column it leave no other fighter in that weight class a reason to be concerned when matched against Ant. Trejo should not have lasted 12 rounds nor should he have landed as many punches that he did on Ant. This was the perfect opportunity to increase his KOs and Trejo was waiting to lay down but wasn't forced. Not hating nor complaining - just a fan who enjoys the sport and purchase tickets to events. Ant keep training because there have been climps of greatness from you. It's time to increase your fanbase and fireworks is a sure way to do that!

No its not emotion,im not saying that he is not a good fighter Nate Campbell, his last fight he did look great against Jaun diaz but just a couple fights back he got his behind knocked out, with one punch against a guy he shold have never lost against, as people say you shouldnt loose against, but any given day any fighter can be beat, Ant is 23 a young fighter and still have room to grow, they act like he's been pro for 10 years, just to much critizim, any fighter knows that your job is to win, name me any world champion, who has not lost and all of his wins came by knockout or any fighter on that stage, its amazing how we try to tear down a local fighter
Glad we started the dialogue -- this is good for the sport, talking about Anthony like this. Who wouldn't want to see him next time out? I don't think it qualifies as tearing down a local guy to offer constructive criticism of what you see. I would be shocked if there is a single regular on this board who roots AGAINST local fighters when they go out of town, fight on TV, battle contenders, quest for titles. But rooting and discussing a fighter's good and bad points and offering valid criticism are two different things, and you can talk constructively about a guy without knocking him. Everybody knows, or should know, boxing is the HARDEST sport of all, and Anthony Peterson -- and everyone busting their hump every day in the gym -- deserves only the most unqualified respect. But you can still speak critically and respect. I personally think if Anthony can win like he did the other night every time he steps into the ring, it doesn't matter if the fans or critics like him. I disagreed with the TV commentators when they said boxing is about entertainment. That's only for the promoters and the fans. Boxing is about winning, self-preservation and making money. Like Al Davis said: "Just win, baby." That's what Peterson continues to do. He looks like he's out there doing his best. Do I think he looks vulnerable? Yes, in some ways, but that doesn't mean he won't step it up as he faces better competition. So far he's passed every single test. You can't beat that. -- J.S.
It seems there is two issues always going on, How good a fighter fought as in offense, defense, skill and stamina and then how exciting was it. Bob Arum will make the finale call of how this effects Anthony's next time out. But not every fight is going to be a Ward Vs Gatti, Anthony is known for exciting fights and might not have delivered in that area but, he has also been criticized about being too much of a banger and not enough of a boxer and he did prove that wrong. So Let it be what is it was a solid outing and a solid win. We will have plenty of time to see what happens at the next level. One thing about both Ant and Lamont, they know how to win.
Technically solid performance by Peterson... only problem was, I actually fell asleep around the sixth round.
Off of this outing, I wouldn't really care to watch him again until he's fighting a top guy. Cos the fireworks have been missing in his fights up to now and it doesn't look like he's gonna change anything about it...
It seems like he's too interested in executing the perfect move rather than taking the guy's head off. Rather like watching mini-golf instead of Tiger Woods or synchronized swimming instead of break-dancing...
