BATB Legends Interview -- Andrew Maynard!

This is the first of an occasional series of interviews I plan to do (time permitting) with some of the legendary Beltway Boxers of the last 20 years.

Gabcast! Boxing Along the Beltway #84 - BATB Legends Interview -- Andrew "Smilin' Drew" Maynard!

From Harlingen, TX, Beltway Boxing Legend and 1988 Olympic Gold Medalist Andrew Maynard talks frankly about his amateur and pro career and how the "Sugar Ray Leonard Survival Kit" didn't help his pro career.

Andrew sound great. He dont sound like a guy who is a boxer or a guy who has been knockout.Ray Leonard didnt do this guy right.I think Ray could have done more.Ray didnt or dont care about knowbody but him.Ray set him up against Bobby Czyz.Ray a legend how did say to tell Drew to run from a guy that was over and on the way out.Andrew good to hear from you.Ray has always been a guy that could never Train or Promote a fighter. He just a guy that can talk and was the goodboy of boxing.Ray sold you out and people your heard it.FRom your best friend and I was a student to you and you was the teacher.

Wow great interview.Gary that was the truth from a guy who just like a lot of boxers on top of the world one minute an working the next.I like what I heard from a guy who knows what he did yesterday don't take care his family today. All boxers don't get the big money.Gary great great to hear from a guy we haven't heard from in years.I'm happy to he's doing great for himself and his family.Fighters around the beltway it's ok to work if boxing does't work for you and your family.Gary once again great.

Great interview Digital! Drew seems like a really nice guy but I'd have to disagree with the post that said Drew didn't sound like a boxer. I think the damage he suffered during his career is minor and it's something he should be able to live a normal life with.

What a great team the 88 Olympic Team was! WOW! Really, it's one of the best, if not the best, of all time!

I agree with the last post you can here some not a lot that he was a fighter.James Harris lost to Micheal Carbajal.Paul Walker lost to Kelcie Banks.Jamal Hinton lost Kennedy Mckenny.Alton Wrights lost Todd Foster. If you can think of some else please post it TooSharp lost to Eric Griffin that same Year Sharmba was lost to Ed Hopson that same year.Wow we had some talent around the beltway.Gary can you get inouch with any of them.I think that would be great to see what they are doing now.

Thanks for the comments! I will definitely try to do more of these in the future!

To add to the last post: Keith Holmes beat Kelcie Banks in the pros and Mark Johnson stopped Arthur Johnson at the DC Armory.

Gary who old was TooSharp and Sharmba when they was in the trials. Those guys been around boxing it seems like forever. And why the dont slur there voice.I know both took a lot of punishment late in the game not early an is it true that Sharmba is about to fight.Gary what you think about him fighting again.

That's because Too Sharp and Sharmba practiced the art of boxing: "Hit and don't get hit!" At the top of their game, they were fierce (particularly Too Sharp). Sharmba was a good athlete who had a style that only the very best could catch up with. Sharmba always boxed in a circle and he would always try to throw a quick little punch and get out of the way at the same time. If you could handle that, you could handle Sharmba. Mark, on the other hand, was dominant at his weight class. A truly great boxer. Sharmba was very, very good.

I think they shouldn't fight again but who knows. They where truly great fighters in there era.The only way they should fight again is if they fight fighters who just like them are just comming back. Not no young tigers. But whatever Good Luck.I would hope if they do. That the fight around the area and some guys from the area.

It was great hearing Andrew Maynard ,But tell it like it is ,not like you want it to be. First of all Ray Leonard did not train him, Pepe Correa trained him and had him looking like a real fighter with great Boxing skills in the Bobby Czyz fight he hurt himself because he broke Boxing tradition hours before the biggest fight of his career ,he knows what he did and thats why he had no legs late in the fight go back and watch the tape he was ahead on all the score cards until his legs gave out. After that fight he left Leonard won 6 in a row then lost to Frank Tate trying to fight HIS fight TOE to TOE TKO 11th ,then fought Tommy Hearns TOE to TOE got KO1 then went 5-7-2 at the end of his career ,who was to blame for that he should be telling guys like Gary Russell you have get back up after being knocked down in life .Russell bounced back after defeat ,he should have been able to do that, but put the blame were it belongs......

That's crap! I remember that fight and Andrew Maynard was getting beat handily from the first round on! And leave your wive's tales at the door and get yourself a little information and education. There's no way a little hummada hummada weakens anybody.

It's alot easy to blame it on someone else.I Can't believe Ray And Peppe let him break camp.So whos falt is that.If you are my mgt. or trainer you should have been all over me like stink on doodoo. Its the biggest fight of my as well as yours. The bottom line is peppe cant train a dog to piss.

maynard may have lost that fight no matter who trained him, however, we all know that leonard did everyone he kows wrong, including his own family

Your can say what your want to but I know for a fact what they did to Drew sold him out

Anonymous said...

Can't nobody sell you out.You sell yourself out.If he knew the game plan with Bobby was wrong then he has to adapt to that. You know buy round 2 or 3 that its going wrong so then what you do keep with the game plan and get beat or change it.
