The August WBO rankings have come out and DC heavyweight and NABO Heavyweight champion Tony "The Tiger" Thompson is officially the number one contender for champion Sultan Ibragimov's title.
We all know that Ibragimov is slated to defend his title against former world champion Evander Holyfield on October 14. However, I received the following email from WBO President Francisco Valcarcel:
Dear Gary:
Tony Thompson is #1 and he could be the Mandatory Challenger for Sultan in
March 2008.

Francisco Valcarcel
We'll see what happens.
By the way, Thompson is the second Beltway Boxer ranked number one by the WBO. NABO Lightweight champion Anthony Peterson is ranked number one at lightweight.

The BATB Supercard is inevitable!
I stepped out of the loop, because I really don't know enough at this point to even be an asset. It will happen though. This area has too many good promoters and fighters more than capable and ready, smart enough and hopefully humble enough to sweep aside any burned bridges and join hands and roll.

N A H. Head says yeah you are right ACW, but my naive boxing heart beats NO. My heart wishes that everyone could all come to the table fresh and realize what the BATB destiny could be.
The biggest problem with your supercard is there would be too many chiefs and not enough indians.
Promoters can and will not band together for your idea of a dream card.
Although it sounds like a great idea it couldn't benefit all the promoters financially so your supercard won't happen.
And last but certainly not least
who will decide who is the area's
best fighters.Whoever chooses them will make enemies for the rest of their lives.
There will always be someone unhappy
If you look at the card that was proposed back in July, I think that is a good representation of who our best boxers are at the moment.
Yes there may be some unhappiness, but I think most boxing fans would agree with that.
Why would promoters have to join hands to promote one of these cards? Their doesn't seem to be any benefit to that. It only takes one promoter to stage a promotion.
It wouldn't help spread the financial loss because the loss on that card would be huge.
If money could be made, you know these promoters would band together quicker than a one round mismatch.
The real problem is no ideal size venues and fighters wanting too much money as well as the public having too many other entertainment options.
And it wouldn't help Beltway Boxing really. One big supercard's memory will fade away rather quickly. More important, I think, is to keep pushing small cards with better matches and more consistent programming. Like same time of the month and same venue with familiar fighters. That's what will let the public make an emotional commitment to attending the next show... if they already know when it's going to be and if they know that some of those guys they just watched that night are going to be on the next one.
And of course, if they know they're going to be witness to the same great, ass-kicking action they just saw that night.
Nobody hopes for a mismatch except the winning fighters mom and wife.
