Beltway News and Notes!

A few random items:

Woodbridge, VA light heavyweight Andre "Da Heat" Hemphill fought to a four-round draw with Simon Carr on Friday, August 24 in Philadelphia, PA. Many published accounts say that Hemphill was indeed robbed of a victory. Hemphill's record goes to 6-6-2, three KO's. Carr falls to 4-1-1, three KO's. The bout was a rematch of an October matchup in which Hemphill defeated Carr by unanimous decision.

Keely's District Boxing and Youth Center, run by former Beltway Boxer Keely Thompson, is having a festival in honor of a young man named Terry Cutchins on Saturday Sept. 1 beginning at noon. Cutchins was a 13-year-old who was training at Thompson's gym. However, prior to his first bout, Cutchins was struck down by gun violence earlier this year.

The boxing event will take place at 13th and Girard Streets, NW beginning at 2 PM. There will be food and refreshments and special guests, including a scheduled appearance by former world champion Evander Holyfield.

Boxing Along The Beltway sends its heartfelt condolences to JP Flaim of "The Junkies" on WJFK-FM. Flaim's father passed away earlier this week.

Of course you remember that Flaim fought Jay Watts in his only professional boxing card on the Lange-Cabell I undercard at the Patriot Center last December.

Keely's event sounds really cool. Think I will pop down. Sorry to hear the news about J.P.s Dad...Gary, didn't he have a death in the family around the time of the Patriot Center Fight?

I want to say JP lost his father-in-law around the time of his bout. I think that was the case.

keely thompson is a bum. claims to have been a world champ but was not a world champ. why is he honoring evander, who is cockblocking tony thompsons title opportunity. way to show dc support. he assaulted a girl in his gym and is under investigation by the irs for driving a bmw he bought with gym donations. he is a fraud and talks like an idiot cuz he is one.

how dare you!!!

Keely Thompson was the IBC Lightweight Champion of the W-o-o-o-r-l-d....!

Plus he got more connections than you could ever handle. And he drives a Beemer.

And didn't you know his kids are the best boxers in DC??? Well, at least they're the fastest... "speed, speed, speed..."

The International Boxing Council (IBC) is a lightly regarded boxing sanctioning body whose "world champions" often lack widespread recognition. IBC titles are often a stepping-stone for fighters who progress to more prestigious titles.

We've had a number of IBC champs, including Derrell "Too Sweet" Coley and Gerry "Rock" Payne. But as was said before, the IBC is a lightly regarded title.

My sympathy goes out to J.P. and his family after the death of his father, and, earlier, his father-in-law. Terrible losses, both. Doing the WJFK blow-by-blow of J.P.'s fight at the Patriot Center, working it with The Junkies, was as much fun as I've had on the job in my career. I admired J.P.'s enormous courage (craziness?) that night under so much pressure -- the death of his wife's father, the inexperience in boxing, the huge crowd there to support him, the weeks of hype leading up to it. . . It showed a lot about what kind of person he is -- all good. May your dad rest in peace, J.P.
Sincerely,
John Scheinman
