Full Report from DC!

For those who could not hear Quentin Coles's report from the "Black and Brown" Throwdown at the Lincoln Theatre in DC. Here is a written account with information provided by legendary boxing writer JR Jowett of Boxing Digest Magazine.

DC Bantamweight Clarence "Untouchable" Vinson made his return after a two-year layoff a successful one as he scored an eighth-round technical knockout over Jose German Cruz of Ocotlan, MX. According to Jowett, Vinson started early in this contest, scoring heavy to the body and head. Although Cruz stayed in the bout, Vinson increased his output and by rounds five and six, he was totally in control of the bout.

Vinson finally finished it in the eighth with a lot of pressure, forcing referee Oliver Murray to stop the contest at 1:29 of the round. Vinson's record is now 15-2, six KO's. Cruz falls to 2-4, one KO.

In the co-feature, undefeated Capitol Heights, MD featherweight Thomas "KO" Snow stopped Mike Salyers of Rush, KY at the end of the ninth round. Jowett called the fight a good one albeit one-sided in favor of Snow. In the third round, Snow landed a solid right hand that had Salyers hurt but he wouldn't go away.

Referee Marshall Cunningham penalized Snow for hitting on the break in the sixth round but Snow regrouped and punished Salyers in the remaining rounds. Between the ninth and 10th rounds, the doctor in attendance stopped the contest because of a bloody nose and seemingly evident blood filling in Salyers's left ear.

With the win, Snow raises his record to 8-0, six KO's. This was Snow's fourth straight knockout victory. Salyers is now 2-10, two KO's. He has lost seven straight.

According to Jowett, two local heavyweight prospects scored crushing knockout victories. Horace "The Reason" Grant of Bowie, MD scored a first-round knockout over Chris Brown of Ashland, KY. All it took was one thunderous left hook by Grant to drop Brown to stay.

Grant is now 2-1, two KO's while Brown is 1-2, one KO.

Also, "Big" Phil Brown of Upper Marlboro, MD registered a first-round KO over the debuting Thomas Gillispie of Ashland, KY. Jowett said Brown had Gillispie stumbling and bumbling all over the ring before a left hook sent Gillispie to the floor for good. The knockout was Brown's first of his pro career and he is now 3-0.

The card got off to a rough start for the locals. In the opening bout on the card, DC junior welterweight Reggie "The Mechanic' Holly was stopped in the third round by Carlos Cisneros of Los Angeles by way of El Salvador. Holly was dropped in both the first and second rounds of the contest. Then in the third, according to Jowett, Cisneros nailed Holly with a right hand before Holly was able to get out of his own corner. Referee Marshall Cunningham called the fight off at :15 of the third.

Holly's loss drops him to 6-2, two KO's. Cisneros is now 8-14-1, five KO's.

In the only fight that went the distance, veteran Larry "The Gladiator" Brothers of DC lost a four-round unanimous decision to Shon McCourt of Selma, NC. McCourt who at 6'5" had a MAJOR height advantage over Brothers and Jowett said he kept the bout at a distance and poked just enough punches to win the bout. All three judges scored the bout 40-36.

Brothers's record is now 6-22-3, four KO's. He has lost seven in a row and is winless in his last nine. McCourt is now 2-0, one KO.

Thanks again to Quentin Coles of BlackEye on Sports (heard on www.im4radio.com Friday's from 8-10 pm ET) and JR Jowett of Boxing Digest magazine (monthly on your newsstands) for their coverage of this card.

The fights were ok, but hardly anyone showed up. The place looked empty. I guess everyone went to the Jimmy Lange fight. Nobody even conside the Lincoln Theater fights.
Who ran that show at the Lincoln Theater? Who would be that stupid to run a show on the same night as a Jimmy Lange show? Whoever it was, needs to check on things before making so a move. It not only hurt the tickets sales, but hurt the boxers too. They must have felt terrible not having no one to watch them box. The promoter needs to find another line of work. Who the hell was it? Does anyone know who this so call baby girl is? who would call themself baby girl? We should of known better in the first place. I was shocked when I got there, Some people paid 35.00 a ticket but if they waited just 30 more minutes, they were selling tickets for $5.00
And it was still empty. Local amature show do better than that.
What a dumb move having a show on the same night with made up titles belts. A damn joke. Mrrion Barry was even there, he too wondered where everyone was at. Its the craziest shit I ever seen yet in boxing. Everyone trying to earn an easy buck, usually it back-fires like that show at the Lincoln Theater

I went to the show, and Mo you called it exactly what it was-
A JOKE!!!!

Anonymous said...

I was pissed I paid 40.00 for me and my co-worker. Then I found out I could have gotten the same tickets, same section for 5.00
Never again will that happen

Let me try to explain exactly what happened.

The promoter who put the DC show together is Cassandra "Babie Girl" White. She is a wonderful person who promoted a solid show in March of this year featuring Henry Buchanan taking Lloyd "Jabba" Bryan.

Joe Hensley, the promoter of the Jimmy Lange shows in October and this past Saturday, had the December 9 date in hand at the same time Cassandra did.

After she announced that date, she came to the October 7 Fairfax show at the suggestion of a person involved in the Beltway Boxing scene who I will not name in the hope that she would change her date. She decided not to do so.

Cassandra learned a valuable lesson -- "if a show's not there, don't force it."

My opinion is that Cassandra hoped she was going for a different audience -- the Latino as well as the African-American audience.

Cassandra wanted to prove a point. It's obvious from the comments here and the fact that there are so few comments when compared to the posts on the Virginia show, that she failed in this case.

The 'Brothers' should have been there to support the 'Brothers', and the 'Latinos' should have been to support the 'Latinos'. Y'all knew that there were 'Brothers' and 'Latinos' on the show, and y'all didn't show the proper support. Listen to you 'hatin on someone putting forth a good effort to be successful. What did your best effort to be successful bring you? If it was unsuccessful, would you want someone to speak erroneously about it? Note: When concerned about the attendance of an event being less than par, simply show up yourself! Don't talk about it, be about it.

Well,......., where was he?

Mike Sawyer has two surgeries scheduled (left shoulder and right hand). He's a hooker and if you watched his last fight, he hardly threw it at all. Also, if you watched his fights last year, you'll see he got worse each fight and although he kept quiet about it, I KNOW he's been nursing injuries all year. Hopefully, he'll be back late next year or in 08'.

Mike is suffering some bad hand and shoulder injuries. He is suffering something very similar to a rotator cuff and he will be out for a while.

This has nothing to do with Brothers supporting Brothers or Latinos supporting Latinos. This was business and you need to remember another saying we like to use around here:

"If it don't make dollars, it don't make sense."

The Lincoln Theatre show didn't make dollars because it DIDN'T MAKE SENSE!

It didn't make sense to put the DC show on the same night against a card that had three legitimate area drawing cards (Lange, Andrew Farmer and Boone Pultz), another guy who people like to talk about (Dean White) and a very popular radio talk show host that has the promotional machine of a popular radio station behind him.

In all honesty, if Cassandra had put her show on even on the afternoon of December 9, she would have done a lot better than she did.

This is not about hatin'. I would have loved nothing better than to see Cassandra succeed. That is good for the area But anyone who knows anything about this area knows this was a bad business decision and those people --myself included -- tried to tell her that. She wouldn't listen!

I told Cassandra that it would not be wise to have her show on the same night. She told me that I was crazy and the place was going to sell out. I heard that a total of 87 people showed up and purchased tickets. Most were smart and got their tickets for $5.00 after the first bout had started. We all tried to tell her to change the date, but she refused to listen. She actually had the nerve to say that most people were coming out to see her.She did have some little bay girl out-fit on, but to be honest she made a complete fool of herself running around with an outfit that was fit for a 14 year old. She also refused to give several boxers the pay that was agreed on. They swore never to fight on a card of hers again. She also made Thomas Snow pay for his own belt that he won. Josh Hall who put up the ring was given a check that was post dated for next month. I heard him tell her that it will be the last time he comes to DC. I hope he realizes that everyone here is not like that. His check will bounce like a super ball. It will give us all a black eye. I hope she makes good on her deal with him and all of the boxers. It will hurt us all in the long run. She did take one hell of a lost for being stupid, but that does not give her the right to give out bad checks and cut boxers pay because of her stupidity.

I don't understand why the DC Boxing Commission would bless this fight, knowing that it was going against such a huge show in VA. Just another needless black eye for DC Boxing. Isn't the commission interested in being proactive and strengthening our presence along the beltway? Our boxers deserve much more respect and protection by the people who ARE responsible for their success and wellbeing. How the hell are we ever going to get on the map/ or televised or keep decent boxers with antics like this?

Gary why didn't she get some people with a crowd. Vinson can't draw flies to shit. And she had Thomas Dnow as co main. Come on that's crazy. She to bring in somebody else to help her. Gary who is working with her or who's stealing money from her. Juice is that's who and everybody else.

Anonymous said...

Gary is it true that TooSharp is working on a deal to bring fights back to DC.I hope he's not going make stupid moves like Cassandra. I herd he has a metting with the DC boxing. He will do it right believe that he has been watch and learning wat and how to make and bring boxing back to DC I will vote for him to boxing com. In DC what you think

Gary Digital Williams said...

I don't really think this had much to do with the people Cassandra had on the show, this has to do with the timing of the show. It was a bad business decision to hold the show on the same night at the same time.

It is true that Mark has been working on some deals to bring bouts to DC. Nothing is complete yet but as soon as I find out, Mark and I will let everyone know.

Gary Digital Williams said...

DC needs the fights, so I don't think they were in a position to turn the card down.

Having said that, they should have STRONGLY suggested that Cassandra change her date. I'm not sure they did that.

Anonymous said...

I hope Cassandra did not quit her day job!

Anonymous said...

While in retrospect, Cassandra's timing was unwise to say the least, the taunting and name calling accomplishes nothing. As a fan, I have nothing but respect and appreciation for anybody who takes the significant financial risk to underwrite a boxing show.

I, too, have wondered whether or not there is significant crossover among VA boxing fans, and those in DC and Maryland. Apparently the answer is a resounding "Yes!" (Although I'd suspect that most of the lost crowd at the Lincoln show were Maryland and DC fans who were at the Patriot Center, not Virginia fans who would have come in to DC.)

Regarding the theory that this card died due to "Brothers not supporting Brothers," and "Latinos not supporting Latinos," one should note that both categories were featured prominently on the Patriot Center card, too.

Anonymous said...

look man! Cassandra continues to screw up. BOTTOM LINE

Gary Digital Williams said...

Sherman,

I think we can all agree that this card was a bad business decision for Cassandra.

But I can't agree that she has made bad business decisions in the past.

Her show on March 3 of this year was a solid boxing card, in my opinion. Personally, I don't think she received enough help from the DC Commission in that case.

She did put together a solid amateur card two summers ago that really benefited the DC community.

I think Cassandra can and should be a major player in the boxing scene in DC. DC needs someone who is willing to step forward and promote cards in the city.

Hopefully she first realizes she made a mistake here and then hopefully, she will learn from that mistake.

Congrats Snow, wish I could have made it. Mike Sawyer

Also, good job Adam, Ray, and Phil.

Reggie, keep training bro, and don't be discouraged man.

I spoke to Cassandra earlier today. She claims that The people in VA purposly ruined her show. She chose the date 2 months before them. She also said she will never hold another pro-show in DC again. She will be testing virgin grounds of Silver Spring Maryland. I wish her luck. I think she will make it.
She is planning on putting an all female card in March of 2007. She said the male boxers cry to much about their pay...

Gary Digital Williams said...

The folks in Virginia had nothing to do with "ruining" her show. I don't think Joe Hensley went out of his way to ruin Cassandra's show.

Silver Spring isn't exactly virgin territory. There was a show at the Armory Place back in the mid-90's. But I agree, it's a good move.

An even better move might be to try to go back to places like Martin's Crosswinds or La Fontaine Bleu in PG County but that may not happen because those places may be wary. Previous promoters did not always pay their bills.

T. snow wake up your fight bum acting like fight someone you better slow down you see what happen to you man reggie H. gym hope think he know everything you are so dump that you pay for a belt tell us y did you do that so you can walk in the ring with it at your next fight your are crazy

Gary Digital Williams said...

All of the names mentioned were successful to a point. If they had one thing in common, it is that they did not have good promotional skills.

Fortunately, a lot of the cards were still successful because they had great fighters on the card.

Cassandra had a meeting with Joes this evening, she has decided to call it quits, but will be working with Joe in one way or another. Good Luck Cassandra

Gary Digital Williams said...

Joe who?

Anonymous said...

Gary,Cassandra did not have the money in cash to pay the boxers off. She wrote a check to each and everyone of them. All checks bounced and the fighters are fuming. She refuses to answer her phone and is missing in action at this moment. Thomas Snow fought his ass off, he does not deserve this. He has a small child that he raises on his own and now that child suffers too. What will Christmas be like??? Phil Brown had to pay others for helping him out of his own pocket, and now his check bounces. Reggie Holly gets knocked out and his check bounces, he gets screwed twice in the same nighty. All the guys from out-of town will never want to return to Washington DC. She not only screwed the boxers that fought, she has given DC a black eye that will take quite sometime to repair. She is done! Trust me, know one will ever trust her again in the boxing game. Hell! I would trust Juice before I'd trust her again. Juice does not even write bad checks...

Anonymous said...

Gary,

Stop taking up for the Middendorf's and the Cassandra's when they screw us fighters over. Your losing your cred in boxing here and we like you to much to have that happen. I have now been screwed by both Sugar Tits and Middendorf, and would like you to stop taking up for bad folks.

Anonymous said...

Gary, the guy does have a point here. Cassandra really did all those boxers wrong by writing the bad checks. I spoke to one of the boxers who fought Phil Brown. He said he never once had an amature or pro fight. He never even sparred before in his life. I asked him why he was fighting Phil Brown and his response was that he was getting $600.00 and he needed the money for Christmas. Now he ends up being knocked out for absolutely nothing. Face it Gary:
Cassandra is a very bad person to do something like that to all those boxers.

Gary Digital Williams said...

First of all, I am not "taking up" for anybody! My job is to find out both sides of the story. That is what a reporter actually is supposed to do.

The fact of the matter is that these accusations are being thrown around by people who DON'T HAVE THE GUTS to put their name behind them! I take those with a grain of salt at face value until I see proof.

If you want to give me UNDENIABLE proof of these accusations, email me at beltwayboxing@hotmail.com and we will talk then.

Even with that, the people accused should have the right to defend themselves and I am giving those folks the opportunity.

I have more "cred" than most if nothing else because I put my name behind EVERYTHING I say on this blog. Those who post anonymously are the ones who need to check their credibility.

Anonymous said...

New to your blog but you seem very angry that their your friend Cassandra is being found out for what she is. You have a great rep in boxing and you run a chance of it turning bad if you keep taking up for a crook.

She also ripped folks off when she was a ringcard girl/stripper.

Gary Digital Williams said...

If you have been following this blog, you would understand that I wasn't even at my "friend's" show. I was at the show in Virginia on this evening.

This has nothing to do with friendship. I didn't even know Cassandra before her card in March.

I'm just angry about people making these accusations anonymously (like you) without supplying proof.

Like someone else said, everyone focuses on the negative but when I offer something positive (like the Year-end Excellence awards) for the fans, no one wants to participate.

I don't have a cut card. I was the first to come out and say what a bad business decision Cassandra made on the ninth. But I'm not going to accuse ANYONE of being a crook without proof. That is called libel in my business and I can get in big trouble for that.

Cassandra is taking juice to civil court, but it is her that is writing bad checks.

Anonymous said...

Quit hating on Gary. It's not his fault that these folks are crooks. He is such a nice guy that he does not see it and is trying to be a good - decent reporter.

Your comment about Sugar Tits was funny though. But didn't someone already use that line?

Anonymous said...

cassandra has been advised to file bank ruptcy firt thing monday morning. she will not be able to make good on all of her bad checks.
she is going through some rough times as of right now. please go light on her,she need your support now. juice is willing to help her out if she dropss cgarges against him in dc court this week. what a mess...

Anonymous said...

Mac is she going to go back to stripping again? Not being funny but she made a lot of money in the baby girl outfit.

Anonymous said...

She has too much cellulite to ever strip agin. She was fired from Clancy's in 2001 because of her drinking habits.

This is Thomas "KO" Snow:

Anyone who has bad things to say about other people, needs to first check themselves.

About me paying for my belt: That's ridiculous. I would expect a better rumor than that to be flying around.

Yes, boxing does need to come back to DC, but not in this manner. Instead of being negative about the situation, people need to put forth a better effort to be proactive rather than reactive to what's going on.

I have nothing against Cassandra. What goes around comes around and whatever she did to me or anyone else, GOD will get her back for it. I still wish her all the best of luck for her promotional endeavers even though things didn't go right with this show.

So in a nutshell:
Stop hating, and PARTICIPATE.

Hey Thomas

Congratulations on your win, I spoke with you a couple times when you and Dean were trying to hook up to spar. It seems like everybody wants to hate for some reason or another. You sparred with Dean and he really appreciated it, he might be looking for some sparring in the near future if your available.Dean beats a good fighter in Dorin Spivey and people still don't give him the respect he deserves, but that's alright he'll get his day.

Doug

Anonymous said...

Hey Doug,

I would love to spar with Dean anytime. Haters are everywhere, but they will soon learn that they will never prosper. You have to learn to be a gentleman and be professional in and out of the ring. You have my number. Talk to you soon.
