Luther Smith Knocked Out on ESPN2!

Washington, DC junior middleweight Luther "Sugarman" Smith was knocked out during a nationally televised bout on ESPN2 last night. Smith was making a comeback after a more than three-year absence but he was floored in the first round by Delvin Rodriguez on a card at the Foxwoods in Connecticut.

Smith left the ring on a stretcher and was taken to a nearby hospital, but Fightnews.com is reporting that Smith IS conscious and responsive.

Smith was a promising boxer but has fallen on hard times lately. Smith's record now is 22-4-2 with 12 KO's.

That did not look like the Luther Smith I'd seen in the past. Was that a jab or an invitation to punch him? Who the hell had him in with that guy in his first fight in 3 1/2 years and where were his cornermen when he got knocked cold?

All good questions. Smith's management seems to be at fault here Legendary DC Boxing hall of famer JD Brown is Smith's manager. Why he had him in on this particular bout is beyond me. Smith should have found an easier opponent than that.
